Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.

I often read about the robberies and murders, so it’s nice to see a different kind of story once in a while. A guy in Alabama named Eddie Revells is suffering from cancer due to asbestos poisoning and lives only for his weekly game of Texas Hold ‘Em.

But at one of the card games Revells participated in recently was a man who gave Revells some hope. On Saturday, the man, Jerry Cornog, and a group called Thrivent Financial for Lutherans donated time and $400 in materials to build a ramp at Revells’ residence. The ramp is wheelchair accessible, though for now Revells said he would just need it to hold onto in order to get in and out of his house.
“Never woulda thought somebody I met from cards could help me like this. It’s just a wonderful thing,” Revells said as he watched the men and women work from his front porch

electronicarts.jpgHasbro sold the rights to electronic versions of its board games to Electronic Arts last year. This was one reason that people suspected was behind Hasbro’s moves to take down Scrabulous, the Scrabble knock-off on Facebook.

EA just announced some of the first licensed games now in development. These include Littlest Pet Shop and Nerf ‘n’ Strike for the Nintendo Wii. Other games include Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Risk, Yahtzee, Scrabble, Operation, and Pictureka.

For details, read the press release.

chinaflag.pngThe Chinese Ministry of Culture has added ten more games to its approved list of online games for teenagers, including five role playing games, four recreation and chess games, and one educational game, such as “Warring States II Online,” “Rainbow Island Online,” and “Wonderlands of learning and games.”

These games are certified healthy and to enhance intelligence. Anyone know where to find the complete list?
