The movie Ice Age 3 isn’t due until July, 2009, but deals are already in the works to produce the puzzles, cards, and board games that are (obviously) required to turn a profit.

Ravensberger, the licensee, says: “The licence [sic] has a proven track record on box office receipts and merchandise sales. And it’s a growing phenomenon – the franchise grew with the second film.”

David McDonough recounts a ten day task to design a playable board game set by Brenda Brathwaite in her class on Game Design Criticism and Analysis at Savannah College of Art and Design.

The game had to be play tested and fun. It’s a fascinating walk through the design process, settling on and discarding themes, false starts, prototypes, and play testing.

Dozens of families in Delaware were bilked out of money after signing their children up to an afternoon Chess club that never happened. It was a scam set up by a con-artist who took the money and ran.

The story goes into details of how background checks should have been done and so on, but it also mentions that this same guy ran legitimate Chess programs in previous years at other schools. To me, that makes it sound like this year’s scam was more of a sudden decision than a long term scheme.
