Monte Cook to “Consult” on Pathfinder

Monte Cook, author of some of D&D 3 and 3.5 and other stuff, was about to retire from the RPG industry, but it seems he’s still going to.

Not much in the way of news, I know, but despite rumors to the contrary, the announcement by Paizo that he is “consulting” on Pathfinder is just a fancy-pants way of saying that they email him for suggestions and he replies, whereupon Paizo does what it wants.

This pun infused card game (M.A.S. stands for “Multi-dimension Attack Ships”) seems to be not much more than a simple game with a brief political hook.

The rules aren’t on the website, but hints about them are. Slightly more info on the rules at the BGG entry.

True20 Ancients by Highmoon Media

Highmoon Media Productions has announced an agreement with Green Ronin Publishing to produce a line of True20 Ancients sourcebooks. While conversions of material originally released by Green Ronin as d20 supplements (the Mythic Vistas series), Highmoon will be adding new material and reorganizing the work on cultural lines. The first two books available will be True20 Ancients: Rome and True20 Ancients: Israel & Canaan. If you might be interested in historically-based adventure roleplaying, or just a break from the standard high-fantasy fare, keep an eye out for this. Highmoon promises opportunity to smite the enemies of the Lord in ancient Israel, battle demigods on the outskirts of Troy, and navigate the deadly politics of the Roman Empire.

As part of this year’s Sally Ride Science Toy Challenge, teams from Clay Hill Elementary School in Florida and Pilgrim Park Middle School in Wisconsin will be presenting their board game designs to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The purpose of the contest is to promote an interest in science among young students. An admirable goal, certainly, but I wonder if PTO is really the best judge of innovation and quality presentations in tabletop games.
