Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.

In what may be the most productive event of the current Bush visit to the Middle East, Laura Bush stopped by a mixed Arab and Jewish school to play cards.

The game isn’t named, but according to the source, they played with colorful cards illustrated with pictures of animals. Go Fish?

Celebrated Bolllywood actor, director, producer, and screenwriter Aamir Khan loves Settlers of Catan, according to a post on his blog.

Getting back to Settlers of Catan, it’s a wonderful game. You must try it if you are fond of board games.

I received the following email from Shubha Galgali:

We are a group of MBA students from the Paul Merage School of Business, UC Irvine. We are working on a project for our class Edge that explores how technology (specifically, web 2.0 tools) and globalization are transforming the business landscape. As a part of our project, we have created an Amazon web store with the theme of Game Night. We sell popular games for game night on our web store and 4% of proceeds will be donated to Kiva.org or Global Giving.

4% isn’t much, but if you’re going to be buying games anyway, it’s better than nothing.

After Worlds will be a new campaign setting for Iron Crown’s HARP SF from something or someone called Cloven Fruit Games.

The setting is a post-apocalyptic world and daily life is a constant struggle. It’s due out in November.

Games For Educators Launches

Games for Educators is the brainchild of Mary Couzin (of the Chicago Toy & Game Fair) and Patrick Matthews (of Live Oak Games).

According to the site, “GamesForEducators.com is your source for everything having to do with games and educators. Whether you are a teacher, a librarian, a homeschooler, or even a game company trying to keep track of how games are being used in the classroom, this site is for you.”

Actually, games for educators is already a pretty crowded field, but I wish them luck.
