Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.

Are You Sure? the African American Edition is a DVD game from Daryl Penn, a teacher who saw a need for such a game after failing to find much in the way of black cultural questions in the game Scene It?

The edition identification is a hope for turning the game into a generic base for other trivia games. He invested $25,000 to produce 1,000 copies of this edition, each of which retails for $34.99. According to the source, he figures he needs to sell about 800 copies to break even. (I’ll wait while you do the math.)

For what it’s worth, I couldn’t find any other African American DVD games, either, but it’s not hard to find the Black Heritage trivia board game.

Pulp Guns

I find you can’t beat GURPS for the range of topics covered by RPG supplements. So it’s with no surprise that I read about Steve Jackson Games’ release of High Tech: Pulp Guns 1 as a PDF download. Soon to be followed by Pulp Guns 2 covering more military hardware, this book catalogs handguns, shotguns, and submachine guns used by the heroes and villains of the pulp genre.

No Middle Ground Preorder

No Middle Ground, a game depicting the 1973 Yom Kippur War, is being offered for preorder by Lock ‘n Load Publishing. With three maps (one for each scenario), 352 die-cut counters, and player-aide cards, this war game allows players to recreate the battles of Chinese Farm, Operation Badr, and Operation Shocktroop between Israeli, Syrian, and Egyptian armies.

Cool Prizes for Sharing RPG Ideas

After previous success generating a bunch of roleplaying adventure and characterization concepts, Musings of the Chatty DM is running another contest, this time for NPC ideas. Prizes include issues of Kobold Quarterly, 1-on-1 Adventures from Expeditious Retreat Press, Pathfinder adventure modules from Paizo Publishing, a White Wolf World of Darkness rule book, and various gamemaster support e-books. The great thing about Chatty DM’s contests is the focus on quick concepts, maximizing inspiration while minimizing fluff. In this case, Chatty DM is looking for one sentence NPC descriptions—and you can enter the contest as many times as you are willing to submit NPC ideas.
