Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.

Primus Inter Pares

Tribune, originally published in Germany, is now available in the United States from Fantasy Flight Games. In this board game, players represent the patrician families of ancient Rome and compete for power and influence over the city’s seven factions. Tribune is said to be a short but substantial game for gamers. It won the Fairplay Poll at Essen Spiel 2007.

Blasphemy

If you like conflict between religious icons as a theme in your boardgames, then follow the link to Cocking a Snook for an introduction to the game of Blasphemy. In this one, 2-4 players compete to convince their compatriots that their Jesus alone is the genuine messiah.

(By the way, I think it’s a blog by homeschoolers, but I’m not sure.)

More Savage Releases

Pinnacle Entertainment Group is busy these days. The company just announced three new releases for Gen Con in August. The first is Slipstream, a pulp science fiction setting for Savage Worlds. The second and third, Coffin Rock and Traveler’s Tales, are adventures for Deadlands: Reloaded! and Savage World of Solomon Kane.

Savage Spin-Off

Pinnacle Entertainment Group recently revised the way it’s licensing its Savage Worlds roleplaying system. Now, the license is free but restricted to companies approved by Pinnacle. The latest news, though, provides greater insight into Pinnacle’s new approach. A new company, Triple Ace Games, has been established by former members of the Pinnacle team, and is the first licensee. Additionally, Triple Ace has assumed control of the Necropolis 2350 and Sundered Skies properties with the intent to continue publishing materials.

After the Fall of the Stellar Imperium

Reality Deviant Publications has released a core setting book for its True20 science fiction RPG of the same name, Reign of Discordia. Within this PDF publication you will find new core races and character roles, background information on planets and interplanetary organizations, and starship rules and sample starships. Reign of Discordia is a space opera setting where the R’Tillek crusade to exterminate the known species, Earth and Lamog are in a cold war, and galactic civilization depends on crime syndicates and corporate conglomerates.

Bejamin Baugh’s Been Busy

The author of Don’t Lose Your Mind also has another new preorder-print-plus-PDF bundle available through Indie Press Revolution. This one is Dreadful Secrets of Candlewick Manor, a sourcebook for Arc Dream Publishing’s Monsters and Other Childish Things roleplaying game. Monsters balances on the edge between horror and humor with players taking on the roles of children and the vicious monsters that are their best friends. Candlewick Manor puts players in a dreary orphanage and asks them to discover the secrets of their own forgotten pasts.

Explore Madness

Don’t Lose Your Mind, the first supplement for Evil Hat Productions’ Don’t Rest Your Head, is available for preorder through Indie Press Revolution. Evil Hat will officially release the product at Gen Con in August. However, if you preorder the printed book, you’ll get a PDF version now. Don’t Lose Your Mind details new techniques for enhancing insanity in your game, including 26 madness talents and the resulting nightmares.

Don’t Rest Your Head is a game I’ve been wanting to try. But I’m not too proud to say, I’m also a little afraid.

SimplyFun is the Avon (or Mary Kay, or Tupperware) of the board gaming world. Not only do they sell games via “consultants” who host board game nights / sales events in neighbor’s houses, they’ve published a slew of decent games. That’s pretty good for any game publisher.

According to my source, whenever Sara Smith of Blissfield, Michigan, sells $400 worth of games, SimplyFun donates $80 worth of games to an organization of the seller’s choice. She’s helped donate games to educational institutions in her area three times, so far.

But according to SimplyFun’s website, that $80 is supposed to be credit to Sara for selling the games. So, if I’ve got this all correct, it’s Sara who’s doing the donating.
