Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.

Dilbert’s creator Scott Adams runs a restaurant, Stacey’s. In order to drum up business on Monday nights, he offers his customers to sit and play as long as they want.

Bring your own games, or play the ones they have available:

  • Apples to Apples
  • Clue
  • Trivial Pursuit 80ies
  • Candy Land
  • Life
  • Connect 4
  • Scrabble and Scrabble Junior
  • Chess x2
  • Double 12 Dominoes
  • Pictionary and Pictionary Junior
  • WII bowling

Note that the list doesn’t include The Dilbert Game. I’ve written to them to check if that is indeed correct, because that’s just silly.

The Economist on Eurogames

The Economist features an article on Eurogames, Puerto Rico (“second-best board-game by users of boardgamegeek.com“), and European board gaming in general.

The article talks about why Germans dig games, and also gets in some digs against Monopoly and electronic games in passing.

Polar Bears International is a source for information about, and conservation efforts for, polar bears.

They have a downloadable guide with great facts and pictures and a free print and play board game (not much of a game, but there you go).

P.S. I wonder if they made a video game out of that cute sequence in An Inconvenient Truth where the polar bear has to leap from ice flow to ice flow to keep from drowning.

The Balancing ACcT is a board game that teaches about accounting. It’s for 2-4 players. No accounting experience necessary.

“The Balancing ACcT game brings to life the elements of assets, liabilities, owners’ equity, revenues and expenses through visual play using cards, cash, and dice.”

Yours for only $130 plus $10 shipping. I’m assuming that they don’t intend to sell too many of them.

Heavy Gear Roleplaying

In a joint announcement, Steve Jackson Games and Dream Pod 9 have revealed plans for a roleplaying game based on the latter company’s Heavy Gear property. Heavy Gear is set 4,000 years in the future on the distant planet Terra Nova. Nations descended from the original colonists fight with each other, and with Earth forces trying to retake their colony, using humanoid mechs.

Dream Pod 9 will continue to produce the miniatures line for Heavy Gear Blitz!, while Steve Jackson will release the RPG, at least at the beginning, electronically through e23. In a different move for Steve Jackson, the Heavy Gear roleplaying game will not be a version of GURPS. Instead, the game will be an updated 4th edition of Dream Pod 9’s Silhouette system.

The End of Times Arrives Via PDF

Alpha Omega is a roleplaying game that details a post-apocalyptic planet Earth where humankind is caught in the crossfire between warring groups of angels and demons. The rules provide players with unique options for choosing a level of complexity. Now Mind Storm Labs is making the game available in PDF format. But with the quality of art in this book, you may just find yourself tempted to purchase the hardcover in addition.

d20 Modern Lives Free

So that you can keep playing d20 Modern while the books are getting more difficult to find—and, of course, so you will continue to buy their d20 Modern supplements and settings—RPGObjects has released a free Modern d20 Core Kit. The download includes both the d20 Modern SRD text files and 100 pages of extra material for character creation, new classes, feats, and skills. To go with this, RPGObjects is also making available for free online its Modern Character Generator.

New Fantasy RPG Magazine

Polymancer Studios, publisher of Polymancer Magazine, has announced that it will produce a new magazine for fantasy roleplaying games. The new publication, Paladin, will provide readers with monsters, adventure seeds, mini-campaign ideas, new character classes, templates, complete adventure scenarios, and fantasy fiction. Common to these articles will be a focus on “the most popular and best known RPG on the market today”—I’m guessing they mean Dungeons & Dragons.

A date for the first issue was not announced. However, Polymancer is inviting interested writers to contact the company about potential freelance work.
