Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.

Crossword Challenege, the board game, follows the efforts made to translate SuDoKu into a board game by turning crossword puzzles into a board game.

Roll the die, land on a square, fill in the clue on the crossword puzzle, and get points for your attempt.

I’m wondering what kind of market research they did for this. Most crossword puzzlers that I know would balk in horror at having to let someone else solve parts of their puzzle.

The game is annotated as from “R&R Games” but doesn’t say which one.

It’s Alive!

Congratulations to Purple Pawn founder Yehuda Berlinger on the reprint of his board game, It’s Alive! Publisher Reiver Games has begun shipping the game to preorder customers with copies to distributors in Europe and the United States soon to follow. The first time around for It’s Alive! was a limited edition, but based on the game’s success Reiver went ahead with a larger print run featuring improved components, revised artwork, but the same great play. In It’s Alive! players compete in an auction for body parts to be the first to assemble their Frankenstein-style monster. If not from Yehuda, take it from me, It’s Alive! is a fun, quick game with a delightfully quirky theme.

The Book of Experimental Might – in Print!

Monte Cook has announced that Paizo Publishing has taken Monte’s collection of house rules and modifications to the D&D 3.5 game (originally published as the PDFs, Book of Experimental Might and Book of Experimental Might II) and will be offering them as a nice printed book.  Now, you may ask, “Why do I care about 3.5?  I already have 4.0!”  But I say to you that there is solid gaming goodness to be had here!  For example, Monte’s changes to the game include:

  • New takes on the main character classes
  • Tons of new spells, feats and magic items
  • New base classes
  • A completely revamped spell progression chart
  • Magical disciplines that are spell-like abilities without the annoying praying/studying (sound familiar?)
  • Fighting domains that allow warriors to further specialize
  • A completely revamped feat system

Heck, with this puppy in hand, you may decide that 3.5 has plenty of life left after all! (and if you can’t wait, you can always purchase the PDF or print on demand versions from Monte directly!)  If you can hold out, the Paizo book will be available before the end of the year.

Warmachine Legends: Legacies

Now you’ve got an even bigger opportunity to “play like you’ve got a pair.”  Privateer Press, the company that takes great pride in its hardcore miniature games has created a new event that encourages stores to allow players to have it out once and for all and celebrate the release of the newest expansion for the game, Warmachine: Legends.  In the Legacies events, a one day tournament is held at participating stores, with three titles being awarded:

  • Legendary Champion – most victory points for the day
  • Legendary Strategist – most flags captured
  • Legendary Assassin – most victory points from killing characters and solos

The event takes place over the course of one day for an 8 hour period consisting of 4-6 rounds.  Players should bring 750 points of their favorite Warmachine faction.  Rules, maps and retailer information can be found at the Legacies event website.

WarriorElite has published their first game, War for Edadh.  In War for Edahd, players take control of one of several forces in a struggle for dominance.  In the game, players create forces of units and leaders represented on individual cards.  The foces line up against one another and engage in direct conflict, using their strength to face off against one another.  The game’s rules and a set of sample cards are available on thier website.  The artwork is interesting, though the choice of black and white may limit its appeal, but the game’s rules are definitely unique and are most likely to appeal to non-collectible card game fans.  War for Edadh will officially launch on October 2nd.
