Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.

Sexplanation is a reworking of The Grapevine Game, another board game you have never heard of.

The game is meant to open frank discussion of sex and sex-related topics for teenagers. Email Vicky West for details.

While interest in European-style board games has seen tremendous growth in the United States, many games published there are never distributed on American shores. Of course in the internet age, it is possible to order directly from retailers overseas. And a number of the most dedicated gamers make the trek to Essen for the largest annual board game convention. But those methods for purchasing games can be difficult and quite expensive. Online retailer Funagain Games offers you an alternative. They’ve just received a shipment of almost 400 different titles from Germany. But if you’re interested, I suggest you move quickly. Several have already sold out.

Also, if you have any particular recommendations for those of us who are not familiar with these games, please let us know in the comments.

Arrr, What a Sale!

I’m a day late but the sale continues. Commemorating Talk Like a Pirate Day, RPGNow and DriveThruRPG are runing a 20 percent off sale on pirate and high-seas themed roleplaying products. Prices are good through Sunday, September 21st. Included in the sale are products for 7th Sea and Freeport, as well as a variety of pirate supplements for d20 and RuneQuest, and generic stuff like ship maps.

And not to ignore the other side of that great debate, the Quiet Like a Ninja Day sale will begin September 26th.

St Albans will be hosting a block sized Monopoly game around it’s streets on Sunday, Sept 28, 11:30 to 4:30. It’s a game, but the main point is to discover the sights and streets of St Alban.

Entrance is free, teams are up to 6 players, they’re hoping for at least ten teams, and – yes – there will be free parking in selected locations.
