Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.
That old military-style RPG set in a cold-war version of a post-apocolyptic setting is being updated for the modern era. It was originally published by GDW and is now being produced under the name Twilight: 2014 by 93 Games Studio. So far, they’re taking preorders for the hardcover and throwing in the PDF for download, as well as a character generation booklet, an equipment booklet, a character worksheet pad, and a laminated quick-rules sheet.
War games publisher Avalanche Press is making a special early Chistmas offer. Buy two games and get a third for free. And shipping is free to the United States and Canada.
Mattel announced that it would be eliminating 1,000 jobs (3% of its workforce) in light of “tough economic situations”.
Which makes not too much sense to me, seeing as 1) it’s coming on Christmas, and 2) toys and games actually get a boost during tough economic times, 3) they’re launching a new line of products, including several new licensed products, as well as Bezzerwizzer, and 4) it’s not going to make the tough economic times any easier for the families of the 1,000 people who are no longer working.

Alien Head Games has produced a strategy game called Perduco.
I can’t tell you much about the game – something about path traversal – but maybe this strange video ad can.
They have another game, Ten Sided Solutions (“Roll 10 dice to build the highest score in 34 categories.”), and another game on the way called Evolution.
The Japan Public Health Association created a series of board game called Crossroads following the 1990s earthquake that devastated Kobe.
The five person voting game asks ethical questions, where you score points for being in the majority if a vote is 3 to 2, or being the lone voice if the vote is 4 to 1.
A sample question reads: “Suppose you’re a nurse. The hospital you’re working for has decided to accept avian flu patients. You are worried you could become infected and subsequently infect your child, who goes to a daycare center, with the flu. Do you think it’s appropriate to make up an excuse to miss work in this situation?”
They released two versions of the game: one about bird flu, and one about food safety. Other organizations have subsequently made localized versions tackling other topics.

Three history geeks have created a local trivia board game about their city called All About Town Milwaukee. Three history geeks is not only a description of the designers, but the name under which they published the game.
The cards, board layout, and game play look similar to – big surprise – Trivial Pursuit.
Update: Featured on Fox News Milwaukee on Sunday, Nov 30. For over 10 freakin’ minutes.

The 13th Olympiad for blind and visually impaired Chess players recently finished in Greece. Information on Chess for blind players can be had from the International Braille Chess Association.
As near as I can tell, each player has their own board, and calls out their move to their opponent. If you’re curious, Amazon sells this set for blind or low-vision players.
In honor of Scrabble’s 60th anniversary, some people are playing Scrabble in rather unusual locations.
Pictured are Nicole Angelides and Ramsey Kent, who threw themselves and their Scrabble board out of an airplane at 13,000 feet. I assume the game was short.
Other tales include couples playing in the presence of lions or alligators, underwater, on high mountains, on ledges, or on glaciers.
