After first seeing the light of day at Essen, Hurry’ Cup! is now available in the U.S. by way of Asmodee Editions. The game takes players on a 1920s European road rally and includes over 30 road tiles to vary the race course.

A light-year away from pirate board games, turns out that two of the things the Somali pirates had in common with their Greek hostages were cooking and cards.

But as the hostages got to know their guards, the crew discovered that the Somalis played a card game similar to a Filipino game. They established the rules with hand signals. Genonangan said he beat the pirates sometimes — but not too often.

The first Austrian Sungka tournament was held on November 30 at the Völkerkunde Museum in Vienna. Sungka is the version of Mancala played primarily in The Philippines.

“Our main idea why we staged this tournament is to open the awareness of the Filipinos and maybe interested Austrians that sungka is a unique Philippine game. Further we want to let children born in Austria with Philippine origin to learn about their cultural heritage,” said Professor Johann Stockinger, the tournament’s organizer.

No reports on the turnout, except that one of the organizers was “happy with it”.

Bruce Shelley, who helped design the computer games Sid Meier’s Civilization, Railroad Tycoon, and Age of Empires, is being inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences.

Bruce was also co-founder of RPG publisher Iron Crown Enterprises, and contributed to Titan and 1830.
