Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.

Mongoose Money

mansion-carsCould this be the gamer version of real estate seminars advertised on late night TV? I Am Mongoose, And So Can You! is a just released PDF book with the bold claim that it is possible to “find glory and riches while working with roleplaying games.” Author Matthew Sprange of Mongoose Publishing tantalizes with this story:

Before I started Mongoose, I was living with my parents and driving around the country to fix computers and printers for a living for a salary that, quite frankly, I now find somewhat embarrassing. Eight years later, Mongoose is still trading (a feat in itself), I have my own home (whose value would raise the eyebrows of anyone in the US), and drive a Jaguar.

And he’s willing to let you in on the secret. All you have to do is buy the book. Come to think of it, I’ve got this fantasy campaign setting I’ve been working on. None of you have one of those, right?

Real Life Rhino

It is my considered opinion, that you, my dear readers, were not suitably impressed when we brought you news that the folks at THQ were working on a real life Rhino in order to promote their upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War game for the PC. I humbly submit, that now, we should have your undivided attention. Not only have they set up a new website dedicated to this work of violent art and a facebook page (that gives you the opportunity to win your own, life-sized Space Marine – warning: you have to be in Britain to win), but they’ve also posted this video.

I am speechless at the sheer amount of awesomeness we have witnessed.

sjgSteve Jackson has published his annual Report to the Stakeholders with some interesting, if not very surprising, facts. At 75 percent of sales in 2008, all things Munchkin brought in around $2.2 million in revenue. While GURPS still accounts for most of the remaining 25 percent of sales, thin margins on RPGs means that in the future the company will continue to focus more on board and card games. Pyramid magazine, which Steve Jackson recently moved to a digital format, is currently operating in the red. So if you’ve been sitting on the fence about subscribing, it might be now or never.

The bottom line is Steve Jackson’s top three priorities for the future are:

  1. Keep existing Munchkin games in print.
  2. Release new Munchkin products.
  3. Develop entirely new board and card games.

If you think you might have something to contribute to this effort, the report also mentions that the company is currently hiring.

greenwich_country_clubThe Greenwich Country Club will host its 9th annual Scrabble Challenge on May 6 to benefit Literacy Volunteers, an organization helping people improve their English skills so that they can find work. They expect over 300 playing participants, as well as support from major local businesses.

How peachy. To learn more about this very old, very famous club (circa 1992), read this.
