Aye, Dark Overlord!

ffg-aye-dark-overlordAs an initial aside, what is it with all the exclamation points in game titles recently?

Anyway, the latest game in this trend looks to be a fun card game by Fantasy Flight. In Aye, Dark Overlord! you get to play the minions of Evil Genius Rigor Mortis. As often happens, the Overlord’s most recent scheme has failed and someone has to take the blame. Just make sure it isn’t you!

nj-dot-comNJ.com, online representative of several of the state’s local newspapers, reported on the Dreamation convention held in Morristown this past weekend. The event has been booming in recent years, particularly with strong representation by indie RPGs. It’s nice to see that the article follows suit with good coverage of the range of games played and an extensive gallery of photographs. Still, among the more interesting assessments of the games, I found this statement perplexing:

Like cricket, these games can last for weeks.

Miniature Environment

evil-mushroom-stone-headMiniatures terrain manufacturer Evil Mushroom Games specializes in complex scenery elements, unusual buildings, and nonstandard figure bases. These include a missile silo with retracting roof, a Hobbit home in the side of a hill, and a giant carved stone head. Among the dozens of resin bases for mounting miniature figures are sections of factory floors, industrial rubble, cobble stone streets, and elongated road sections for vehicles.

Twilight the Board Game

twilightboardgame.jpgI spent five minutes trying to figure out a witty way of saying that this idea makes me want to wretch. Ignoring my revulsion-induced stupor, its true – there is a new Twilight-themed board game releasing sometime soon. From the description:

A new board game based on the highly anticipated Twilight motion picture! Reenact the hunt for Bella through the woods of Olympic Peaks with your friends, with one team portraying Bella and Edward while the other representing the hunting nomads James and Victoria. Each team uses hidden movement system – who will survive to the morning?

To be honest, the rules remind me a bit of Fury of Dracula (which is an outstanding game if you can handle the rather lengthy play time), but this may be one of those rare cases where the theme of a game is a total turn off…

Update: There seems to be some question as to whether or not this title is coming out. However, IO9 recently got to take photos of the game, so it seems likely that its actually coming out (though it hasn’t appeared on the publisher’s site yet).

GURPS Playtesting

gurps-martial-artsUntil recently, Steve Jackson Games offered GURPS playtesting positions as a special benefit of subscribing to Pyramid Magazine. But with the change in format of that publication, the company is now turning to the regular customers of its e23 download service. Those who’ve spent more than $50 at e23 in the last year can apply for the opportunity to playtest Gladiators, an electronic supplement for GURPS Martial Arts. No prior experience with GURPS or playtesting is necessary.
