Klingon Armada

star-trek-enterpriseA just announced agreement between Majestic Twelve Games and Amarillo Design Bureau will soon result in a Star Trek version of the Starmada space ship miniature combat game. Amarillo is, of course, the company that already produces the classic Star Fleet Battles. The difference between that game and this new product is that Star Fleet Battles focuses on single ship-to-ship combat, while Starmada is specifically designed for large fleet engagements. With Klingon Armada, players will be able to test the pride of the Klingon Empire against the United Federation of Planet’s Star Fleet. Soon thereafter, expansions are planned for the Romulan Star Empire, the Tholian Holdfast, and others.

Booz Allen, a government contractor with $4 billion in annual revenues, is a big believer in tabletop war games. Every year for FOSE (Federal Office Supplies Exposition) they create a mammoth war game to illustrate some technical concepts in an effort to educate the players (federal employees) as to why they should be adopting new technology.

This year’s effort was on Cloud Computing, and the six demo games, each of which was 5 by 7 feet and took up its own converted craps table, combined elements of poker, card picking, and decision making. Previous efforts have tackled CIOs and homeland security.

There’s a brief glance at the game in this video about midway through:

One source indicated that the messages imparted by the game were not so straightforward. The game will be making the rounds at client sites within the government.
