The 2009 Board Game Studies Colloquium is underway in Jerusalem, Israel. This is the only international academic conference on board games that I know of.
Yours truly gave a presentation about Eurogames on the first day. Luminaries such as British Museum’s Irving Finkel and David “The Oxford Book of Board Games” Parlett have also given presentations, so far.

Fragments of bone unearthed at Richborough Roman Fort were identified as a dice tower for the game Duodecim Scripta, a precursor to Backgammon.
I wonder where they got the bones to roll in … never mind, I don’t want to know.
