2009 ENnies

Ennie AwardsNominations for the ENnie Awards are out in 19 RPG-related categories. I’ll not repeat all the nominees here. You can check out the complete list at the ENnie website, however I’ll note both some expected and some interesting selections. Of course, I don’t think it’s any surprise that Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition is up for Best Game, but I do notice the absence of the Origins Award winner, Mouseguard. The others in that category include CthulhuTech, Dark Heresy, A Song of Ice and Fire, and Starblazer Adventures. Wizards of the Coast and Fantasy Flight Games are running for nine nominations each in eight categories, while White Wolf is up for 13 nominations in 11 categories.

Voting on the nominees begins July 24th with the results to be announced at Gen Con. In the meantime, nominations for Best Publisher are being open direct to the public.

25th Historicon

HistoriconHistoricon, a major summer event for historical miniatures gaming takes place this weekend, July 16-19, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. With this year’s theme “Ride to the Sound of the Guns…”—Napoleon’s 1809 Campaign and the Spanish Ulcer, there will be games representing battles of the Austrian campaign and the Peninsular War, as well as a variety of events focused on the Sharpe series of novels by Bernard Cornwell. Other activities include the Iron Paintbrush Competition, Hobby University, the HMGS War College, and of course numerous tournaments.

Board Game Pimping Roundup

Two mainstream media sources that seem to excel at board game pimping:

Deseret News pimps A Gathering of Strangers, a Utah game design meetup that just took place, and the Utah Game Designers Guild. (source)

Arizona Republic pimps board game night, as well as Dominoes, Uno, and “European games” like Blokus and Ingenious. (source)

chaps_from_amsterdam

Sggc Hard Impact Games presents Chaps From Amsterdam, a game targeted at adults where the object is to sell your weed on the streets of Amsterdam. The game was released in the UK.

Each player’s piece represents an illegal substance.

And natch, they claim: “This is a game and is not a promotion for illegal activities, all information contained within the game is for educational, recreational and historical purposes, it is not our intention to incite the use of controlled or illegal substances. DONT LOSE YOUR LIBERTY PLAY THE GAME AT HOME.”

Source tells us that some people in law enforcement and drug prevention are none too happy.
