Steaming Over Steam: Part 2

mfg_steam.jpgJust when you thought the situation over Age of Steam couldn’t get any weirder (you remember the ordeal, right? Publisher & designer have a fight over game, both publish competing variations, board game community splits into warring factions…), FRED Distribution (the aforementioned publisher) has sued Martin Wallace (the designer) over breach of contract for (1) creating a variant game that isn’t theirs and (2) not completing a game they commissioned from him. BoardgameNews.com has a great write-up, including a response from Mr. Wallace himself indicating that parts of the contract at the center of the dispute have been added after the fact. If this thing gets any stranger, we’re just going to start forwarding updates to TMZ

Iowa State Fair Game

iowa_state_fairThe Iowa State Fair, a 155 year old event that attracts upwards of 1,000,000 attendees a year, and inspiration for various musicals and books, has an official board game this year, It’s a Fair Game. Roll and move, instructions on the spaces.

The fair will have classic games running, such as tournaments in Backgammon, Checkers, Chess, and Cribbage, but take time out to see the sculpted butter cow, tractor pulls, and musical events.

Pathfinder

Pathfinder RPG Core RulebookThe Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, Paizo’s attempt to keep the d20 system alive as an alternative to D&D 4E, will be released in final form August 13th at Gen Con. Indicators of the splash I expect it to make are the supporting projects debuting at the same time. Adamant Entertainment is publishing The Tome of Secrets, a print book of optional rules for new classes, character occupations and drawbacks, chases, morale, stunts, and other stuff. And because Paizo is using Wizards’ OGL and has issued a Community Use Policy, a fan-made system reference document is already being collected on the web.
