Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.
In other business news from Fantasy Flight Games, today the company launched a business-to-business online store that will provide both distributors and retailers 24/7 up-to-date inventory information, as well as streamlined order processing. For the customer, this should mean more reliable access to the most in-demand games. But more than that, I think it provides us fans some reassurance that Fantasy Flight Games’ expansion is being pursued in a professional manner, and that CEO Christian Petersen is building the infrastructure necessary to keep the company in the business of producing games well in to the future.
The Last Straw, by Kate Rossiter and Kate Reeve, is a game that simulates the social determinants of health, i.e. how healthy you will be based on your gender, race, socio-economic status, behavior, and so on. It was developed originally for their university health promotion class. Now they sell it for $100 plus shipping.
The game takes you through childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age, assuming you live that long. It’s roll-and-move, and your initial starting position determines how healthy or sick you will get as you travel around life’s events. Sometimes players can cooperate to help out one of the other players who’s about to die. If you’re all not dead before the end of the game (this may require facilitator intervention), one of the survivors could be considered the winner.
Here’s part 1 of 2 of an explanatory video for the game facilitator:

Day & Night is a lovingly illustrated game from a team in the Netherlands. The game uses CCG-like mechanics, but the object is to change two sets of nine squares on a board to your color.
You can buy the game, and the original art, from the site.
