Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.

Vivid Imagination has licensed yet another British game show, this time Wogan’s Perfect Recall from RDF Rights.
In the game, you have to answer 20 questions, and then another 20 questions with the same answers (so you either have to answer the questions or remember your previous answers).

Squish Blocks is a card game from Fertile Ground Games.
Each card has a color and a point value. Each turn you replace a face down card from a grid with one of the two from your hand, face up. If you sandwich a card between two cards of the same color, you get the card and its point value. You can play outside the grid, if you have no other legal moves or to capture, but you don’t gain a card back to your hand in the process. Eventually, both players run out of cards and the highest score wins.
They have two demo videos; the game looks good enough, but the two demo videos clock in at a dull 6 minutes apiece. 45 seconds is all it takes, guys!
Although this is their “first game”, they show two additional games on their site, including a licensed Aqua Teen Hunger Force card game. It must be a prototype, because I would think a licensed ATHF game would be selling.
Title Chase is a UK football club management game by Michael Nottley from sggc Next Level Games.
It’s roll and move, pick a card. When you get to the title matches, you roll dice to determine the outcome of the entire game. Use your money to buy star players to add to your rolls.
They have a new licensed Manchester United version.

There are 84 companies listed in the “toys/games/hobbies” category at Brand Licensing Europe 2009, which is where the real money in mainstream games still flows. 4Kids is showing, as is Huntik brand. Lego has an interactive game room.
Word Frenzy from sggc Tame Tiger (aka Frenzy Card Games) is a simultaneous play word game.
A category is chosen, and then each play drafts letter cards until one player can form a four letter word matching the category. At that point, that player grabs a spoon and the rest of the players scramble to grab one of the remaining spoons.
That’s that, but there’s one more thing. Tucked away on their site, you can also buy the game Space Estate, which is essentially Monopoly in space. Space Estate was published in 1985, the same year that Solarquest, another Monopoly in space game was published.

On Sunday, Games Workshop announced Ultramarines, a Warhammer movie based in the 40K universe. There’s not much info right now other than that the movie will be 70 minutes of CGI goodness, and that it will be released straight to DVD.
There’s already a microsite set up for the film, a youtube account, twitter feed, Flickr account, and Facebook page. All of these have little, or no information as of right now.
I haven’t played 40K since around 2003, but I used to love the universe it was set in. The thought of seeing Space Marines (the faction I used to play) in a full-length movie has me very excited. I’m sure a lot could go wrong with this movie, but I’m hoping that’s not the case. Here’s to hoping we’ll some Eldar, Tyranids, Necron, or even some (Your favorite here).
We’ve seen at least 3 movies attempts in the past. Let’s hope this one goes all the way.
Inspired by the popularity of her blog articles on how to approach Gen Con as a business opportunity, author and game designer Jess Hartley is offering an expanded treatment of the subject in ebook form. Conventions for the Aspiring Game Professional is 34 pages of dos and don’ts, advice for navigating the transition from hobbyist to professional, and appendixes of checklists and resources. And at only $1.99, a worthwhile investment.
On Tuesday, Days of Wonder integrated its Online game-playing service with Facebook, and to help promote the launch, the company is giving away one board game (winner’s choice) each day. Users who link their accounts can have the Days of Wonder Online Facebook Application post game results, scores, rank, and even an automatically generated (but customizable) “DOW Game story” for Ticket to Ride and Gang of Four. Each day, now through October 13th, Days of Wonder will pick a random prize winner from among those who use the story-posting service.
