Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.

D-Day Dice

D-Day Dice-Score Sheet.aiFitting for Veteran’s Day, D-Day Dice was released today as a print-and-play game. The game can be played solo, or multiplayer, and features more than just rolling dice. Throughout the game you’ll be moving your soldier and collecting resources, slowly becoming stronger.

Right now the game has one map, Bloody Omaha, and there are plans for more maps in the future. You can also play D-Day Dice on VASSAL.

The designer, Emmanuel Aquin is also the designer of the Zombie in my Pocket variant turned standalone game, Airborne in my Pocket.

Normally the theme wouldn’t do anything for me, but this seems pretty interested. It’s already downloaded and I’ll be giving it a try as soon as possible.

go_board_and_stonesKen Thompson, the creator of the UNIX operating system, as well as B (the precursor to the C programming language), regular expressions, UTF-8 character encoding, and Belle, an early notable Chess playing computer, has co-created a new open-source programming language for Google called Go.

Go refers to Google, of course, but also to the classic Asian board game. (source)

board_game_shelfA recent Harris poll [PDF] indicates that 54% of Americans aged 18 or older will purchase one or more toys as a gift this holiday season. Of those, 30% plan to purchase one or more board games. By my calculation, that means that over 37 million board games will be purchased in the next month and a half.

Only slightly more (36% of toy buyers) indicate that they will buy video games or consoles.
