Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.
At the 2013 Mensa Mind Games this weekend in St. Louis, judges were asked to play 25-30 different games each in just 2 days. With votes from participants, five winners were chosen to receive the Mensa Select Seal:
Forbidden Desert—Gamewright’s cooperative, follow-up adventure to Forbidden Island.
Ghooost!—A card game from Iello about ridding one’s manor of haunting undead.
KerFlip!—An anagram game from Creative Foundry, with cleanup built in to the box.
Kulami—FoxMind’s quick game of capturing tiles by careful placement of marbles.
Suburbia—From Bezier Games, a tile-laying game about building a thriving metropolitan economy.

Forbidden Desert was such a great game when I played it at Toyfair, it’s not surprising to see it win. It hits all the right buttons in terms of complexity, accessibility, tension, and decision making.
