Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.
Shurikens fly, swords slash, and Kung’s Fu, in the fast action game – Shuriken!
Shuriken puts you in control of your very own ninja clan, out to destroy everyone and everything. As you punch your way to supremacy you will learn special techniques to allow your ninja to move faster, farther, and with more deadly force than your opponents.
Shuriken is a great fast action game. If your play group likes “Revolution!” and a few beers, you have to try Shuriken. We loved watching the little warriors swarm across the board, only to meet up in the Temple, or the Geisha District, and fight to the death. We cringed when entire rooms collapsed on our plasticl soldiers, and were amazed at how the techniques combined together to form killing machines.
Fast, furious fun, Awesome Dice has honed in on the best part of a game like this – speed. They keep the game fast and deadly, and that kept us laughing, and passers-by asking where they could get a copy. For some great ninja-fu amongst your friends, go back this kickstarter project!
A prototype of Shuriken was provided by Awesome Dice for review. Awesome Dice is also a Purple Pawn advertiser.

This seems like a great game. I was playing Risk since I was but a wee lad and ever since I have been ever interested in board games like Shuriken.
It also seems to suit the trend of Fast & Furious. Who wouldnt want to be a Shogun with his own clan!
I got to say; another great result from the crowdfunder Kickstarter, I never would’ve imagined that Kickstarter would be a result of the information age and the internet.
Thanks for letting me know Shuriken exists; time to go check it out.
James
BTW, have you ever heard of anything about Risk and why they took so many tangents?
The best version I played was the ’80’s version that took 4 hours.
I would appreciate your opinion.
Thanks for the comments.
The best Risk version I have played is Risk Legacy. The players permanently alter the game as they play it, creating a unique game board unlike anyone else’s. There are also mystery packets that are only opened when certain game conditions are met, changing the rules as you play.
Before that came out, I was a fan of Risk 2210. It takes the classic rules and improves on it while finding a way to prevent the stupidly long game times we all remember from our childhood.
Check Them out at your FLGS.
Hey Randy,
It sounds like we may prefer different games as I do not mind Risk for several hours with 5 people and conquering the world is the only way to win.
And to be honest, I am a Risk fan at heart but I think at this point I am ready to expand the board games. Any recommendations similar to Risk (dice, not cards and placement/direction strategy)?
Thanks.
James
@Tiffany, No doubt, Kickstarter is a great idea but still needs to work out some kinks; I have heard of getting burned or even the inventor going bankrupt.
Axis and Allies? You can get the short 1942 version or the longer Alpha 3+ version with Europe 1940 and Pacific 140 combined.
That will give you your dice, you long playtime, and a bunch of friends in one place.
Brian Wood has been with FFG for a while and sure knows about producing games. It’s a bit on the pricey side, but FatherGeek loves it.
But please don’t mix it with Kung-Fu. Those Ninjas certainly don’t know anything about Kung-Fu. They have Ninjutsu. ;-)
I dunno, that one Ninja in the back? he looks like he might be faking it. His stances look decidedly Drunken Monkey style!
The 250 ninja sculpts and the modular tile board and the mission/technique cards reminded me of Zombies!!! in all the best ways. I like that there seems to be more tactics/strategy involved here – more of a game, basically, than Zombies!!!. And this from a fan of Zombies!!!, mind you.
i also like that for the Kickstarter they emphasized that their rewards were all game-related. They even mention self-deprecatingly that they won’t be offering t-shirts or autograph rewards. So you know your pledge goes right back into the game and making it better.
I also love their budget breakdown of how they want to spend the money. If more KS game fundraisers were this transparent, and this forthcoming with their business model, I’d fund more of them. I’ve been burned by too many in the past.
