Stranger Things Board Games

In time for the second season, Hasbro has three new Stranger Things board games exclusively at Target.

In the Stranger Things Eggo Card Game (“Fortified with Eleven’s vitamins!”) players try to get rid of all their Eggo cards before the Demogorgon attacks. Depending on the card they play, they may switch between the Right Side Up and the Upside Down, cause other players to draw cards, reverse the turn order, or summon the Demogorgon.

Stranger Things Monopoly has players buying, selling, and trading locations and vehicles from the town of Hawkins while searching for Will Byers. It comes with two sets of tokens, one Right Side Up and one Upside Down.

Ouija: Stranger Things Edition links players to the Upside Down with letters highlighted by Christmas lights.

Just revealed by Hasbro is Monopoly Gamer, a variant on the classic with Nintendo Super Mario characters for playing pieces—Mario, Princess Peach, Yoshi, and Donkey Kong. Instead of buying properties and earning money, this version of the board game has players completing levels, collecting coins, and rolling a special die for power-up boosts. Each character piece also provides its player with a unique power-up ability triggered by certain board spaces.

The standard edition of Monopoly Gamer will hit general retail in August at $25, along with additional character game pieces—Wario, Luigi, Toad, Boo, Rosalina, Diddy Kong, Fire Mario, and Tanooki Mario—each sold separately in Power Packs for $4. However, a Collector’s Edition is available already from GameStop with a Bowser figure for $40.

Hasbro has begun accepting orders for its quarterly board game subscription service. For $50 + shipping, Hasbro Gaming Crate comes in two varieties, each with three games.

The first Family Crate will feature Mask of the Pharaoh, which the company describes as a “cooperative virtual-reality board game.” One player describes what they see in a VR mask (mobile device and app required), while the other players, following that description, assemble game tiles in a path to the hidden treasure.

The first Party Crate will feature Joe Santagato Speak Out, an adults-only version of Hasbro’s mouthpiece game. Internet comedian Joe Santagato worked with Hasbro to develop their first Speak Out game but this one is described as “edgy” and “NSFW”.

Both crates are expected to deliver in August. Use promo code “HGCFREESHIP” for free shipping.

Dunk Hat

Dunk Hat ($20 retail) is Hasbro’s latest entry in to the wacky action game category. It’s basically a portable version of the carnival dunk tank. One person wears the water-filled reservoir on top of their head. When either target is hit with one of the included foam balls, the reservoir tips and spills water down the wearer’s face. In addition to the reservoir and targets, also part of the wearable contraption is a pair of goggles, so no one gets hit in the eye.

Hasbro is getting in to the subscription box business with the launch this summer of Hasbro Gaming Crate. At $50 each, the boxes will be delivered four times per year and contain three brand new games. Customers will be able to subscribe to either family or party game versions of the box. In this case, “party” means edgier adult games.

Boards to Bytes

Tokaido, a game from publishers Funforge and Passport about traveling the East sea road in Japan, is now available in digital form (Android and iOS). At first glance, it appears to do a good job of maintaining the tabletop version’s beautiful aesthetic. There’s strategy for sure but the board game, at least, I enjoyed as much for the journey as for the winning. Single player, pass-and-play, and online multiplayer options are all available.

Zynga, in collaboration with Hasbro, has released Boggle With Friends. Available on Android and iOS, Boggle With Friends has both head-to-head and solo game modes, and is free-to-play with in-app purchases.

Also licensed from Hasbro, Marmalade Game Studio has released mobile versions of Clue (A.K.A. Cluedo) for Android and iOS. Right now, it’s single-player only but a multiplayer mode is planned.

Dungeons & Dragons-based Planescape: Torment is coming back in an Enhanced Edition from Beamdog playable on PC and mobile.

Hasbro has announced for fall release DropMix, an app-integrated, music-mixing card game. Developed in collaboration with Harmonix Music Systems (creators of the video games Rock Band and Dance Central), DropMix assigns different elements of popular songs (such as the bass, beat, loop, or vocals) to individual cards. When a player puts one of those cards in a slot on the DropMix board, the app mixes that element in to the music it plays through the linked mobile device (iOS or Android).

Little information has been revealed on DropMix game-play. However, Hasbro and Harmonix have said there’s a fair degree of strategy in what they call “Clash Mode“, which is played 1-against-1 or 2-against-2 to 21 points. The app also allows players to save any mix for play later on their mobile device.

Just a few of the songs featured in DropMix are “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars, “Sing” by Ed Sheeran, “Blown Away” by Carrie Underwood, “I Want You Back” by The Jackson 5, and “It’s Tricky” by Run-D.M.C.

DropMix will retail for around $100 and come with 60 cards. Additional Playlist Packs and Discover Packs will also be available—the latter including a randomized selection of cards for about $5.

Clue Comic Book

The ongoing partnership between IDW Publishing and Hasbro will next visit the board game Clue with a five-issue comic series beginning in June. The story is said to put a comedic spin on the game but will feature Miss Scarlet, Colonel Mustard, Mrs. Peacock, Professor Plum, and all the classic characters.

The new series opens after the doomed Mr. Boddy is murdered at his own dinner party and everyone is a suspect! Will Boddy’s body be the last to fall, or is it just the beginning? Readers will have to follow the clues to solve the mystery, which deepens even further as issue one will feature three alternate endings!

That’s right, variant covers will be backed by different unfolding stories with unique clues.

Clue is being written by Paul Allor (Guardians of the GalaxyG.I. JOE) and illustrated by Nelson Dániel (Dungeons & DragonsThe Cape). The covers are by Gabriel Rodriguez (Locke & Key).

A new television game show is planned based on the board game Boggle. In development by Entertainment One, Keller/Noll, and Hasbro Studios, Boggle Battle will have three teams of contestants facing off over giant-sized Boggle boards. In the tabletop version, at least, the goal is to find as many words as you can—but different words from the other players—in a 4×4 grid of letter dice. The TV show’s game play will also involve special elimination rounds tied to pop-culture topics like Harry Potter, Marvel, and Game of Thrones.

No word yet on when or where the show will be broadcast.
