Innovation Toys has prevailed over MGA Entertainment in defense of its patent for a “light-reflecting board game”. Both Innovation’s Khet (originally called “Deflexion”) and MGA’s Laser Battle involve moving and blocking a series of mirrors in order to reflect a laser into an opponent’s main game piece.
Khet was developed by two mechanical engineering graduate students and their professor. While the three were able to secure a patent for their invention, MGA’s access to distribution gave them an initial leg up in the marketplace. Innovention launched its suit against MGA in 2007.
The final judgement in the case awarded Innovention $1.4 million for lost profit and $170,000 for provisional rights damages.
