Playing now at the Adelaide Fringe festival is Blank Tiles, a theater production about a world champion Scrabble player suffering from memory loss.
Scrabble World Champion, Austin Michaels (played by Dylan Cole) knew over 200,000 words. Then he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
Since then Austin has been in a race against time to document his memories, his greatest achievements, before they fade from his mind and the world forever. Once the toast of the board game world, Austin’s life was full of bottomless champagne and endless parties. But now it’s Nescafe and doctor’s appointments as he spends his time searching for the right words.
Let Austin tell you his story… If he can remember…
Inspired by primitive tribal art, Marie Rime created seven masks from game pieces.
In this serie, the notion of game is being questioned. I tried to expresse my fascination with the relationship between the players. I asked myself what the participants are looking for and whether they are trying to disturb, seduce or intimidate opponents.

For its 28th season in St. Louis, Circus Flora presents The Pawn:
Drawing from the history of chess, this mythic tale is steeped in the rich sights, sounds and mystique of ancient Persia and India. The audience will journey to an exotic world where myth and intellect collide, and the stone city surrenders to the desert’s ever shifting sands. Follow the Pawn on his journey through curious creatures and intrigues: knights mounted on steed, bishops zigzagging across colored squares, chess pieces flying through the air. In this world, the chess pieces do not wait to be moved. They have their own adventures to play out under the big top.
The Pawn will be performed under the big-top May 29-June 22.
