A storefront operation known as Brooklyn Game Lab launches in the coming weeks its first summer program for children focused on game design. Founded by Robert Hewitt, a professional designer of mobile and social games, the Lab aims to provide more than the typical camp experience, not only introducing kids to a range of new games, but also challenging them to analyze, collaborate, and create.
Sessions are organized around concentrated areas of study—such as conflict, cooperation, mystery, and trade—with time allocated to playing and critically evaluating existing games, as well as to developing and playtesting new games.
Since opening a few months ago, Brooklyn Game Lab has hosted a variety of events for children and adults, including after-school game design classes, weekly roleplaying sessions, and speed-dating over board games.
