Stranger Things Board Games

In time for the second season, Hasbro has three new Stranger Things board games exclusively at Target.

In the Stranger Things Eggo Card Game (“Fortified with Eleven’s vitamins!”) players try to get rid of all their Eggo cards before the Demogorgon attacks. Depending on the card they play, they may switch between the Right Side Up and the Upside Down, cause other players to draw cards, reverse the turn order, or summon the Demogorgon.

Stranger Things Monopoly has players buying, selling, and trading locations and vehicles from the town of Hawkins while searching for Will Byers. It comes with two sets of tokens, one Right Side Up and one Upside Down.

Ouija: Stranger Things Edition links players to the Upside Down with letters highlighted by Christmas lights.

Scoreboard

Score Board - Boardgame tournaments, competitions and championships results and scoresJapan’s youngest professional Shogi player, 14 year-old Sota Fujii, defeated the oldest high-ranked player, 76 year-old Hifumi Kato, in his debut match. When Fujii went professional in October, he had also broken a 63 year record held by Kato for being the youngest player to go pro. After further losses in a following tournament, Kato has fallen sufficiently in rank as to face mandatory retirement.

Karolina Styczynska, 25 years-old of Poland, has become the first non-Japanese woman professional Shogi player. She earned her promotion to second-kyu (class) joryu at a recent tournament in Tokyo but her interest in Shogi was sparked back in Poland by reading the manga, Naruto.

Guiness World Records has certified the world’s largest Ouija board, built on the roof of the haunted Grand Midway Hotel in Windber, Pennsylvania. The board measures 121.01 m² (1,302.54 ft²).

Screen Games

Ready for a board game origin story on the big screen? Not one about a plucky inventor. Instead, Ouija: Origin of Evil tells a tale of 1965 Los Angeles and how “a widowed mother and her two daughters add a new stunt to bolster their séance scam business and unwittingly invite authentic evil into their home.” In theaters October 21st.

Recently released on Netflix is The Dwarvenaut, a documentary about the founder of Dwarven Forge and the company’s Kickstarter campaign.

Disney’s Queen of Katwe, based on the true story of Ugandan Chess player Phiona Mutesi, is in theaters now.

It appears that the Jumanji remake replaces the board game with a video game. On the other hand, star Dwayne Johnson claims it’s not a remake but rather a sequel.

A new Clue movie is in the works, being developed by 21st Century Fox. Unlike the 1980s Clue, this one will be a “worldwide mystery” action-adventure story.

Ouija Board Removal Service

OuijaMagician Joe Diamond provides a unique service on the side: Ouija board removal. For people creeped out by the notorious game and alleged supernatural communication device, Diamond will extract boards from their home without charge. To keep them at ease he even wears gloves and burns sage after completing the removal.

Diamond himself isn’t concerned about the Ouija boards. In fact, he keeps some for his collection.

So far, Diamond has removed 30 boards from the homes of distraught clients around Woodstock, Illinois. He says that calls for his service tend to peak just before Halloween.

Gamer Art

Markus Lupfer Luchador FashionFor London Fashion Week, designer Markus Lupfer took inspiration from Luchador: Mexican Wrestling Dice, embroidering masked figures on bomber jackets, party-wear, and light dresses.

Taking place at the Carroll Mansion in Baltimore is Planchette, an experiential theater production about the fictional Maxwell Fink, parapsychologist and Ouija board researcher. The Ouija board was invented in Baltimore and features prominently in the performance, which “was inspired by turn-of-the-century ‘phantasmagorical’ rituals designed to lift the veil and contact the other side.”

Rebellion Chess SetAs part of the ArtPrize exhibition in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Andy Malone is showing the Rebellion Chess Set, his representation of the 1967 Detroit riots. The pieces in the set are gear-driven woodworks. And rather than being divided between black and white, all are two-tone with politicians the kings, media the queens, and the public the pawns.

OuijaIt looks like the Ouija movie project lives but as a low-budget, horror flick. Earlier information had Hasbro planning an expensive, international, family, adventure film.

This latest news comes out of the launch of auditions by Platinum Dunes, a production company owned by Michael Bay and partners.

Ouija will feature a teen who uses a board to contact a deceased classmate, but in so doing, triggers a variety of terrifying results in the lives of her friends and family.
