Talisman Kingdom Hearts Edition

For the first of its new titles based on the Games Workshop license, The OP (formerly USAopoly) today announced Talisman: Kingdom Hearts Edition. The game, available later this year, has players lead figures for Sora, Kairi, Riku, King Mickey, and Goofy on a quest for “Strength and Magic to seal the Door to Darkness and keep Heartless from consuming the communal worlds.”

The OP promises a game that combines the exploratory spirit of Talisman with lighthearted Disney nostalgia.

Coming next month is Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: A Gemstone Mining Game ($35). Based on Quartz, the push-your-luck game of collecting crystals from Passport Game Studios, this Disney version works with up to seven players, each as one of the dwarfs.

Later in the fall, we’ll see Fantastic Beasts Perilous Pursuits ($30), a cooperative dice game where the goal is to put the beasts back in the suitcase.

Coco Movie Games

Disney Pixar’s Coco movie opens in a couple of weeks. Two Coco card games are available now.

There’s Coco Remember Me from USAopoly, which is a traditional Lotería game illustrated with images from the movie. Lotería, common in Mexico, is pretty much the same as Bingo but with pictures instead of numbers, and cards instead of balls or other drawing lots.

From Mattel there’s Coco Uno. Gameplay is mostly unchanged. However, the deck does include a Remember Me card. Throwing that down forces the next person to draw three cards unless they can identify from memory the previous two cards played.

2017 Mensa Select Winners

At the Mensa Mind Games this past weekend in the Virginia suburbs outside Washington, DC, member judges played through and selected the following games as 2017 Mensa Select winners:

Amalgam from Simply Fun—A game in which the players, as wizards, try to collect sets of potion ingredients but have to rely on their memories of the ingredients they’ve already collected.

Around the World in 80 Days from Iello Games—A Spiel des Jahres winner from years ago (Hare & Tortoise), reproduced based on the Jules Verne novel. Players race around the board, moving forward and back as they wish. However, they must carefully plan to arrive back in London with the least amount of cash left in hand.

Clank! from Renegade Game Studio—A dungeon delve fantasy adventure game built on deck-building mechanisms.

Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle from USAopoly—Another deck-building game, this one follows the novels with a series of cooperative games that get more complex and more difficult to beat as they progress.

Imagine from Gamewright—A party game where the giver-of-clues chooses an item from a card and then tries to illustrate the item by combining images and symbols with an overlay of transparent cards.

Disney, Pixar, and Marvel Codenames

USAopoly is paring together a few of its existing licenses with a new one from Czech Games Edition to publish Disney, Disney Pixar, and Marvel versions of Codenames. The first two to hit retail will be Codenames Disney Family Edition and Codenames Marvel Edition this coming fall priced at $25.

In announcing the new games, USAopoly’s John Davis said, “We’re particularly enthusiastic about the artwork, as it includes a great mix of characters and locations that Disney, Disney•Pixar and Marvel fans will appreciate,” which I gather means we’re looking at licensed versions of Codenames: Pictures.

While I may not be a huge fan of Monopoly in general, but my kids are. Not only are they fans, but they really like licensed versions of the game. USAopoly’s MONOPOLY: The Legend of Zelda Collector’s Edition as been a huge hit in our household for quite some time.

How excited was I when Hasbro said they had mailed me out a copy of USAopoly’s MONOPOLY: Pokémon Johto Edition? Not as excited as I knew my kids would be. Pokémon is huge in our household, and my kids were in even more of a Pokémon froth with the release of Pokémon Sun and Moon.

So how is it? Really well made. It’s colorful, dripping with Pokémon artwork and theme, and has really nice Pokémon tokens that the kids constantly fight over. It’s hours upon hours of Pokémon MONOPOLY fun.

Seriously, though. If you like MONOPOLY, and you like Pokémon, this edition of the game is for you.

Gen Con 2016—USAopoly

Gen Con 2016 logoThe most anticipated from USAopoly, Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle ($50), was only at Gen Con in very limited quantities but should be at retail in September. It’s a cooperative deck-building card game developed to be very beginner friendly. The box opens to look like a trunk filled with Harry’s possessions and the cards are packed in boxed for a series of games to introduce the rules in a graduated fashion. In terms of game-play, each person, in the role of one of the Harry Potter characters, gets their own personal starting deck of spell, ally, and item cards but they must work together to defeat the villains.

Also highlighted at the show was the recently delivered Star Trek Panic ($40). This one, another cooperative title, has players defending the starship Enterprise from alien attack while at the same time working to complete a number of missions. It’s a variation on Castle Panic from Fireside Games but has a central Enterprise figure that can turn and also has shields to absorb some of the damage.

Later, USAopoly plans two expansions for Marvel Munchkin, Mystic Mayhem ($20, September) and Cosmic Chaos ($20, December). The former features Dr. Strange and The Defenders, the latter Guardians of the Galaxy and Nova.
