Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.
Cortex RPG is a system authored by Jamie Chambers and released by Margaret Weis Productions.
It’s supposed to be a quick system to learn with simple math that focuses on the characters. And the preview available at the above link isn’t much help, either.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
I’m not sure what your article was supposed to be about, I thought it was going to be a review. I bought Serenity when it first came out and thought it was one of the easiest games to learn how to play and GM. Since the Cortex System is based off Serenity, I would assume it would be close to the same thing, but I can see your point about the preview not really showing much other than the index. A quick start guide for free would be much better. But then again there always seems to be something amiss with just about everything related to this title and all the RPG books related to the Cortx System- Serenity, BSG, Supernatural- as in stuff not quite being what you thought or not coming out when it is supposed to, etc…
steve-o: find me any RPG system that doesn’t claim to be simple to learn so that you can focus on the characters.
My point: the blurb offered to describe the system, as well as the index, tell me virtually nothing about the game, except a tired ad slogan that it’s simple and focused on characters. Very nice. I would like to know how it’s really different – strengths and weaknesses – from other RPG systems.

This isn’t quite the same thing, but if you want a look at some of the design and design philosophy behind the Cortex system, I’ve put up several detailed articles on the subject on my LJ. I wrote a good deal of the core book, so if you have any specific questions, I can try to answer those as well.
These articles are ostensibly about the changes between Serenity and the Battlestar Galactica game, but the changes also apply to the Cortex core rulebook for the most part, and give fairly specific details about a lot of the rules even for those who haven’t played Serenity.
I hope they prove helpful. Also, if you want more info on the Cortex games, check out the ‘Cortex’ tag on my LJ for other articles with optional rules and similar.
Here are the links; the articles are long, so fair warning :-)

Here’s an (un)official web site that might help, it deals with the Cortex system and the specific genres. It’s been around since the Serenity game came out and it has been a tremendous help to me when running the Serenity RPG.

Oh, but wait, I just realized Nathan is from there too…
Sorry, I probably should have mentioned the CSRPG boards as well—so it’s good you caught it, Steve!
Also, pretty much all the staffers from MWP post there as well—so whereas I’m a freelancer who can mostly talk about the simple facts of the system itself, you could ask business/company related questions there and maybe get an official answer.
Blessed be,
