Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.
A board for the game Nine Men’s Morris was found, cut into a wall at Gayle Mill in Yorkshire Dales National Park.
It is believed to have been carved into the wall when the mill was built in 1784-5. Other boards for the game have been found carved into the cloister seats of English cathedrals.
