Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.
At last November’s Chicago Toy and Game Fair, Lund and Company (creators of Fireball Island) sponsored a Young Inventor Challenge. Students 18 and younger were invited to submit toy or game designs.
The winner was South Elgin high school student Joe Basile for his game King of Kingdoms, a board game where Henry VIII, Alexander the Great, King Arthur and others battle over power and territories.
Hasbro gave the 17 year old a two year contract, and therein lies the catch. From what I understand (as reported by the source), Hasbro gets his inventions for the next two years and pays him royalties if they are profitable. Well, at least he got their attention.

Congrats to Joe on a terrific game! It isn’t easy to catch the interest of any game company, let alone Hasbro, the largest in the world.
We were very excited that this year there two winners at the Chicago Toy and Game Fair Young Inventor Challenge sponsored by Lund and Company LLC, Fundex Games and Chicago Toy and Game Group. Joe Basile for his “King of Kingdom” game invention in the Senior Category (ages 12-18) and Hannah Allen and Ella Lambert for The “Lemonade Stand Game” in the Junior Category (ages 6-12).
There were a lot of great submissions and we look forward to this year’s Young Inventor Challenge. For more info on this year’s Young Inventor Contest, send an email to info@chitag.com.
