Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.
Loteria is a popular game in Mexico, similar to Bingo but with pictures instead of numbers on its 54 cards. The pictures are traditional, dating back to the 19th century, and the announcer calls out special riddles or humorous quips when drawing a card, rather than simply stating the name of the card. Each player plays on a random 4×4 grid. You win by forming a square, line, or all four corners.
San Antonio jewelry designer Carolyn Dublin has a new line of jewelry products entirely based on the traditional pictures from Loteria.
All well and good, but three of the traditional pictures have been know to cause arched eyebrows in certain quarters, namely the Drunk, the Negro, and the Native American. I note that Carolyn hasn’t got those onto her jewelry, yet.
