Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.
Car Wars is a beloved classic from Steve Jackson Games – a pseudo-wargame set in a post-apocalyptic future where desperate men and women battle in enormous arenas with highly modified and viciously armed cars, trucks and other vehicles. And now we get it in real life. I think I may cry.
In all seriousness, Weaponizers is a new show from the Discovery Channel which pits remote armored, heavily armed vehicles against a wicked obstacle course and each other. No word on when the show will be in the upcoming calendar, but this is bound to inspire me to hit eBay for copies of the old rules…

Ah Car Wars… I cut my gaming teeth on this game, which I had from the original plastic pocket box. Beautiful Dennis Loubet art.
But “pseudo-wargame”? Why isn’t it a wargame? I’m curious. :)
Best wishes!
I still have my original little plastic box of Cars Wars. But I’ve never played it. In fact, it’s still unpunched (or shall I say, uncut). Josh, perhaps this is something for Origins?
And lookee there…I waded into the age-old debate of “what is a wargame” – you would think I would know better… In the case of Car Wars the advancement scheme and the focus on a cinematic experience always seemed to take precedent over a need to simulate a real scenario which is a common benchmark (not saying its an absolute litmus test, just the common refrain from most gronards!).
David – totally up for that. I was in a few games last year that looked like they might turn into a campaign, but alas, life interrupted :(
