According to NPD Group, US toy sales are down 2% to $7.81 billion. However, board games (referring to game publishers) are up 10% to $353 million. And kids age 3 to 5 are not spurring this growth, as they are down 6%.
In contrast, video game sales (not sure if US only or world-wide) are down 29% at $848.9 million, the fifth straight month of declines. Also, web-connected toys and games (*cough* Chaotic *cough*) are down 43%.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
To be fair, the low Chaotic sales numbers appear to be due to some strange accounting system.
You must be delighted. :)
I will note that videogame sales always fall significantly in the Summer, but that boardgames do not usually rise in the Summer to my knowledge.
Part of the problem the videogames industry is facing right now is its arrogant disregard for the needs of the wider audience. It continues to make the games it wants to play and is then surprised when the wider audience isn’t interested. Personally, after almost fifteen years of this rubbish, I am getting sick of it.
I’d go back to boardgames, but all I did in that space was lose money. :p
Best wishes!
I think the losses are comparing to the same period from last year, not comparing month to month.

When I was evaluating a designer for hiring purposes, I’d always ask them what they thought of Candyland. Designers who couldn’t get over their visceral negative response and discuss the product’s appropriateness for that target audience didn’t get hired.
[…] 2009 As I wandered the ole’ internets I saw the good news at my favorite game news blog, Purple Pawn, about the increase in board game sales for the first half of 2009. The figures are calculated by […]
