Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.
Konami is claiming that a) it has sold over 22 billion Yu-Gi-Oh trading cards, and b) this is a world record, duly noted by Guinness as of July 7, 2009. I don’t know if this includes online cards, or only paper cards.
Considering that the last we heard any sales figures from Wizards, Magic had sold 1 billion cards … 18 months after the game was released in 1993 … I have a hard time believing that it’s still not ahead of Yu-Gi-Oh. But Wizards doesn’t release it’s sales figures, so we can’t know.

Since Konami contacted Guinness themselves to apply for the award in 2006, Guinness undoubtedly had only what sales information was publicly available.
I too am a bit suspicious if they actually are the real record holders in this.
Hey, there was a guy who claimed to have the biggest board game collection with about 800 games, and het got into the book too. I think we all know of people who have multiples of that!
I think the book works like patents: you get it if you ask for it, and only loose your record if someone else has surpassed it and informed them about it. They don’t seem to be investigating if your record is actually a record.
