Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.
There was a post on GeekDad today titled “A Gamer’s Pet Peeve: Big Box, Small Game,” and while the article itself was great, there was a tidbit in there I found very interesting. The author, Jonathan Liu, had created his own, smaller box for Caylus Manga Carta. This got me thinking about my own game collection. How many games do I own that have WAY bigger boxes than they need, and how much space could I save by making my own boxes for them?
My question goes out to all of you. How many of you have opted for making smaller boxes for your games to make them fit in your game space easier? What do you do with the boxes you’ve replaced? Do you store them in the attic/basement, or throw them away?
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
I often make or utilize smaller boxes for portability purposes – I’m the “game guy” who always brings a cratefull to campouts and partys, so I’ve learned how to cram (that is, “carefully pack”) many many games into small spaces. I always keep the bigger boxes carefully stored; being a collector I realize the potential value of that practice.
However, I now have an empty “Ace of Aces” box (someone apparently stole my booklets) and likewise a “Great Delmuti” ’cause the cards got wrecked during a freak rain storm. I really miss that Ace of Aces ORIGINAL EDITION. Whill the perpetrator please return them – brown paper bag in the dead of night? (It’s been several years. I am not hopeful.)
I have started consolidating several games into one box. I can usually get 3-5 games into one standard-sized square box (the same size as Dominion, Lost Cities Board Game, etc.).
Even more useful, I’ve started consolidating all my card games and can fit ALL of them (probably over 20 games) into containers that have a total size that is smaller than the square boxes. I use Hugo’s Amazing Tape to bind the cards together and will consolidate any extra bits that go along with the card game as well. I’ve consolidated such games as Race for the Galaxy, Lost Cities, Balloon Cup, Bang, Bohnanza, Odin’s Ravens, Set, Rook, Great Wall, Jambo, and many more into a container not much larger than a shoebox.
The one game I haven’t consolidated is Dominion since I find the insert that keeps the cards organized to be very useful.
I really wish you could buy a generic version of the standard square box so I could consolidate games and write on the outside what the box contains. Right now I have to just remember that I put games x, y, and z in the Lost Cities Board Game box.
