Adding to the list of attempts to augment board games with electronics (as well as others) is the Human Media Lab at Queens University of Ontario.
Read their academic paper [PDF] and press release, and watch the blinking lights in the video. They use Settlers of Catan hexes as tracking objects for an overhead projector.
