Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.
This past weekend at Dundracon, Joseph Goodman ran a private playtest of Goodman Games newest product, The Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG. For those not familiar with the Dungeon Crawl Classics line, I need to take you back to a simpler time – a time when roleplayers used graph paper like candy, elves were a magic-using character class and plot was a reason for you to travel somewhere and kill something. May sound simplistic, but there’s a lot of nostalgia there and GG has capitalized on it with their Dungeon Crawl Classics line of adventures, reinvigorating the form and really keeping the spirit of that old-school style of roleplaying while bringing it up to a level compatible with modern sensibilities. Not a lot of word on the mechanics at this point, but it’s apparently heavily influenced by Dungeons & Dragons 1st and 3.5 editions and makes for games that are as fast and lethal as the adventure series. No word on a firm release date at this point, but with a promised five minute character creation time and some old-school monster killing, it’s fair to say that I’m in for a copy!

An interesting about-face for Goodman, who not too long ago was making bold claims about the market for D&D 4E.
