Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.
The Climbers, a recent release from Strategic Space, is a game of stacking blocks and placing ladders so as to have your pawn climb higher than any other. The game comes with 35 wood blocks, as well as 5 wooden pawns, and 10 ladders. The pieces are solid, brightly colored, and definitely have play value outside the game.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
This was previously known as Die Aufsteiger when it was published by indie German game company Chili Spiele.
Yes. Strategic Space started shipping this English version in December. As you can tell, though, the playing pieces didn’t actually require any translation.
Because the response at Toy Fair was so phenomenal, we should be out of our first production run of The Climbers in a month or so, so we will soon be ordering a second run, sufficiently larger so significantly cheaper price.
Congratulations Mark!
How was traffic in that section of the show? Did buyers for large retailers find there way there?
Thanks for stopping by, David. We were practically mobbed from 10 am to 3 pm each of the first three days. The Climbers was the star that drew a lot of people to the booth, and everyone who sat down for a demo wanted to buy it, but the high price put a few off, so I started adding up all the orders and realized we’d have to go back for a bigger production run soon. I started giving the lower price of the next run to buyers on the last two days, and then no one passed on it when they heard the price.
4th Corner, our award-winning tile-laying maze game, got probably the next most attention, some specialty buyers taking as many as 3 cases.
Most of the bigger buyers we saw were catalogs and web sites, but it looks like Calendar Club and Hastings will be the two biggest retail chains that will be stocking our games this year. They were particularly interested in Zombie Attack, 4th Corner, The Climbers, and Samsara, our next game which is an exciting blend of abstract strategy and negotiation.
I happened to catch the attention of the buyer at FunAgain Games, a fairly substantial online retailer, with our Toy Fair invitations, and they took several cases of The Climbers that just arrived 2 days ago, and the game is already in their top-ten-best-selling games, #8 this morning.
