Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.
I’ve been thinking about expansions lately. For me, it’s very hard to resist an expansion to a game. I hate feeling like I don’t have the “whole” game. On the other hand, there have been some expansions out there that CLEARLY were just tacked on, and I’ve been able to pass them by.
It seems over the years that expansions have become more and more prevalent. It feels like almost every game has an expansion, or will soon have one. When a great game comes out, people are already asking and speculating about an expansion. They just expect there to be one.
I’m not saying we shouldn’t have expansions. Heck, I released 3 expansions to my own game, and initially had plans for a 4th. Sometimes it feels a bit forced, though.
What are your feelings on expansions? What are some of your favorites? What are some you thought were completely pointless.
Let’s try to keep this conversation varied, as we all know it could totally be taken over by talking about Carcassonne.

I guess my philosophy is to make sure there is something that can be added if an initial game proves popular, and if it makes sense and isn’t just a franchise cash grab. Don’t keep making expansions for years though if the game struggles from the beginning.
My game-buying strategy is this – Wait until the “Game of the Year” edition comes out. All of these over-hyped AAA titles (Oblivion, Fallout 3, Dragon Age) consider themselves “Game of the Year” and they all now have “DLCs” that come out post-release. Fine. I just wait until they’re all out, until the game is about 18-24 months old and then snap up the shovelware “Game of the Year” edition that has EVERYTHING for… What? $39.95? Less? Where everyone else bought the original for $49.95 and each DLC for $19.95.
I’ve probably saved myself a few hundred dollars over the years using this strategy.
