xPirate from Exim Games is a forthcoming board game of searching for hidden treasure. It comes with a rotating central unit to hold your iPhone or iTouch, which acts as die roller, secret location map, and combat resolution device.
Unfortunately, while it looks cool, the game play looks to abysmally dull. Push a button: you move. Push a button: oh no a kraken! Push a button: you win! The game play explanation starts in the video at 1:20.
The game is scheduled for release this fall. Here’s hoping Exim will program something more interesting into the game play before it gets released.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Wait… you mean putting an iPhone in the board isn’t enough to make it the most amazing game ever?
Yeah… dumb marketing gimmick!
Hey there from EXIM Games – we love to get feedback but a review, we were not expecting so early in our development. So game play in xPirate is much more than just pushing a button. The game play is very interactive with animated screens around attack sequences, island treasure hunts, purchasing and selling plunders at the Market, etc… The object of the YouTube video is to show the basic concept of the game board and the iPhone/iTouch interaction. No this is not a gimmick, but a new unique way to bring the family together and play a board game in a way you never have before. We are looking forward to feedback from the community as we develop our application. Obviously we wanted a quick/short YouTube video to show the basic features of our game, otherwise the game play would have taken to long. We have a very high quality game board that is very unique with quality products. Game play will be quite different each time you play and the nice thing about our game board is — as we get feedback our application can grow, unlike any other game board out there. Our goal is to take the kids away from just playing on their own devices and get multi-player interaction and socializing around the board game. We are looking forward to posting up new videos of our application game play as we move forward so keep your eyes on our site for updates – http://www.eximgames.com. If you are interested in getting a first hand look as we move forward – please reach out via our website. Thanks so much for your insight and keep up the good work!
Hey, Exim. Thanks for the nice comment. Like I wrote, the game does LOOK cool. And I appreciate the fact that game play can be upgraded by having a CPU lead the action, and using the gimmick as a draw to get kids playing.
However, if there really is more to the game than what is presented in the video, consider this post a slam on your marketing, not on your game. The video showed the iPhone interaction, but also presented the game as insipid. As such, I think it does more harm than good. (Please let the cute kid in the video know that she did a great job; it wasn’t her fault, it was the script she was given).
LOL – Thanks – we will pull that one and create a new more realistic movie! Thanks for the feedback!
