Welcome to Purple Pawn, covering games played around the world by billions of people every day.
I never played Mousetrap by the rules. I don’t think I knew the rules to the game. All I ever did was put together the contraption and prayed that it would work the whole way through at least ONCE.
I have a feeling I’m not alone on this one.
Did you ever play the actual game? Did you at least know the rules?
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
I remember playing Mousetrap with my brothers. It is really a contraption with a silly roll and move game pasted on. The thing I remember most is calling out “don’t rock the plumbing” because that seemed to be the Achilles heel of our particular set. Apart from that the contraption seemed to work fine.
I played Mousetrap by the rules in my childhood and with my kids when they were young. It’s simply a toy without playing by the rules.
I agree with you that most people just set it up and watched it go. I certainly did this more times than I played by the rules, but I *did* sometimes play by the rules, and my wife insists that she did too.
As for “just a toy”, please, you’ll be complaining that things are “just a game” next. :p
Never played it by the rules…until a month ago when I sat down with my nephew…and we played it by the rules!
Everyone else in the room would, every once in awhile, turn their heads and say,”Is THAT how you play it?”
Agreed with most of the posters here: I’ve never actually played a game of Moustrap – just set it up and watch the magic that is Rube Goldberg. That said, I’ve also never paid for a copy of the game. I think the one we have now is older than I am.
Many games – Risk, Monopoly, RPGs – seem to encourage homebrew rules, but Mousetrap is the only game I’ve ever seen that a)no one plays by the rules that ship with the game and b) no one creates house rules either. A singular achievement!
