Podcast Studio 360 challenged their listeners to send ideas for a redesign of Monopoly to make it relevant for today’s economy. They passed these ideas to famed designers Brenda Braithwaite and Ian Schreiber. The result is Boom.
Boom’s companies range from the cheap “sin” properties on up to Apple and Google on the top spots. More important is the incorporation of Euro-design elements – no player elimination, a race goal (first to $4B), many opportunities for decisions instead of pure chance, etc. Still, the game retains many of the original Monopoly elements, including dice rolling and property acquisition and trading (now intellectual property).
