Responding to an amendment made this past August to the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has approved rule changes that

  1. Allow manufacturers to test representative samples instead of random samples, and
  2. Rely on testing performed by component manufacturers, rather than repeat the testing themselves.

The CPSC has further issued a Request for Comment to solicit ideas for reducing the cost of testing.
