Hasbro logoHasbro’s recently released financial results for the first quarter of 2014 showed overall net revenue up 2 percent (to $679.5 million from $663.7 million in 2013). That performance was supported primarily by the girls category (mostly My Little Pony, My Little Pony Equestria Girls, and NERF Rebelle), which grew 21 percent, while boys matched the overall number and games and preschool were each down 4 percent.

Games category revenues declined 4% in the quarter. Franchise Brands MAGIC: THE GATHERING and MONOPOLY increased revenues in the quarter. Additionally, revenues grew in several Games Mega Brands, while Action Battling games and DUEL MASTERS, a trading card game, experienced a decline in revenues.

Though Magic: The Gathering revenue increased in the first quarter, fewer new cards meant that it could not support the games category as it had previously.
