Alderac Entertainment Group will be publishing a third game, Automobiles, in the company’s Destination Fun game series. The game, David Short’s third for AEG, is a racing game where the player’s car actions are chosen by drawing colored cubes out of a cloth bag. For each game, one of four different color cards for each of the five main colors is chosen, which determines what a particular color’s effect will be. With just under three hundred wooden cubes in ten different colors and several different effects per color, the game superficially reminds me a bit of Quarriors, but with car racing (and no dice). Players build out their cars and pit crews while the race is underway.
David Short had previously developed Planes for AEG, the second game in the Destination Fun series, which was released in 2014. Automobiles is scheduled to be available in October, 2015, with a MSRP of $49.99.
Quarriors! is a fun and fast-paced dice-building game that’s the basis for WizKids’ collectible Dice Masters series. It’s like an interactive card-based deck-building game but with custom dice and no shuffling. Fantasy-themed Quarriors! has players rolling dice to cast spells and summon monsters in a high-powered wizard battle. One of the things I like about it, though, is its offbeat sense of humor. There are some strange monsters in the mix.
An iOS version of Quarriors! is free through Friday. And with the support of WizKids, here on Purple Pawn we’re going to give away two copies of the original, for those like me who enjoy rolling real dice!
All you have to do to enter the giveaway is leave a comment on this article. Tell us which version of Quarriors!, Dice Masters, or other WizKids game is your favorite (or most looking forward to) for an extra entry. The deadline for entry is noon Eastern Time on Tuesday April 14th, after which I’ll roll some physical dice to randomly select two winners.
Please watch for an email on that day. There will be a time limit to responding before I select other winners. Also, the games will be shipped directly by WizKids only to destinations in the United States.
Entries and comments are now closed. Winners will be notified later today.
This week Wizkids/NECA announced the iOS launch of their successful dice game, Quarriors! Developed by Icarus Studios, this adaptation is a successful implementation of the board game.
Quarriors takes the deck building game and makes it a dice-fest. Players role dice to cast spells, summon creatures, and buy more of both. For all of us that find rolling dice to be almost as fun as winning the game, Quarriors! scratches that itch.
The iOS version dutifully recreates the real life experience of the game. Dice tumble across the surface of the ipad, and the interface is clean and well thought out. The play area is clearly defined, and the power cards are always within easy reach in the event that you need to read the full description. If there is any area that is lacking in the iOS app, it is the tutorial. After walking through it, new players didn’t feel as if they had a firm grasp on the game. However, this was not a problem, after a couple of games Quarriors! was fast and fun on the iPad.
Check out Quarriors! in iTunes for under $6, only on iPad.
Quarriors is slated to land on the iPad this November in the US.
As noted, it will be all the fun of the real world dice game on your iPad. Check out the full-fledged website here.
