Let’s talk about your favorite genres in the RPG world. We all know how I feel about certain genres, but which ones do I like?
I love fantasy and sci-fi, but I’m also a sucker for steampunk/dieselpunk and noir settings.
There’s a ton of different genres out there, and probably a ton more niche ones I’ve never heard of.
So how about it? What are your favorites? What types would you recommend to others?

My absolute favorite is sci-fi zipping around in space ships. Still, I’m pretty flexible for a good story. I don’t like crossovers.
I really like superheroes, especially silver age/four-color supers, but it is hard to find a group that shares my narrow genre focus.
Fantasy is my primary genre, partly because it is the most common and easiest to get players for.
SF fascinates me but it is difficult to find a group/system/setting confluence.
I’ve found that genre largely doesn’t matter to me or my group, at least not once we’re involved in the game. (There may be hems and haws when a genre is suggested.)
Some of our best games have been Westerns, Postapocalyptic, Mecha, Steampunk, Ice Age and Horror, though these don’t constitute the bulk of our gaming. Most often played and enjoyed includes Supers, Modern supernatural action movie madness, and Humor.
We do have a certain malaise when it comes to fantasy, unless it’s very much grounded in a specific culture (GURPS Vikings for example). Straight space opera has been problematic in the past. Similarly, I’m not keen on attempting Cyberpunk or Military games. Again, it’s all just a matter of finding the key to playing those genres WELL.
Any negative play experience we’ve had with a genre comes down to my not doing my job well.
I’m a bit of a genre magpie – there aren’t a whole lot of them that I don’t like/play. Put a gun to my head and I’m likely to admit liking supers with an iron age setting, but characters who raise questions about the worth of such a setting (think Ross and Waid’s Kingdom Come with less background to work from), but supers in general really opens things up for a GM in my opinion.
I’ve always been afraid to try a supers game. I know I’d really want to like it, but would need a good GM.
As a Game Master for the past 25+ years, I’ve mostly run heroic fantasy, comic book superheroes, and space opera, with some dabbling in steampunk, espionage, cyberpunk, and time/dimensional travel. All of these have taken place in linked homebrewed settings using systems such as D20 and GURPS, so I can incorporate elements of one (say, fantasy in steampunk) in another.
As a role-player, I’ve enjoyed occasional horror and humor games, and my current face-to-face group is trying a variety of genres and rules sets (such as FATE) during a period of one-shots between D&D4e and my next longer-term campaign. My group prefers high fantasy but has been willing to experiment, and most of our one-shots have gone well.
