Paper Money is a podcast about the production and business aspects of the game industry featuring Ben Clark and Rett Kipp.

Paper Money #54: A Trip to a Con

This week, Ben and Rett are headed to GenCon – like any other right thinking gamer – but first, they recorded a show with some news, some reader mail, and some advice about the mechanics of attending a show as an exhibitor. Have a great week everyone! Drop us an email or stop by the Catalyst Game Labs booth if you’re at the show!

Ben and Rett return after a brief sojourn in which Ben watches the Women’s World Cup and Rett totals his car in search of a game. News of the Week, some great reader mail, and Ben apologizes for his complete wiff on Protospiel. Its all here in the 53rd haphazardly edited episode of Paper Money! If it’s as hot where you are as it is where we are – head down into the basement, crack open a good game, and turn on the show.

Ben and Rett slog through the latest news – White Wolf releases printed material?!, wish they too were at Origins and then debate whether too many games are released during the summer selling season. Rett explains why so many games come out, but Ben says the logic is flawed. Who’s right?

Ben and Rett talk about Hasbro layoffs and HQ move, make a laconic attempt to cover other game news and finally, tear into some seriously crazed packaging problems on two new games that have just hit the market – from what is a bad package to why you shouldn’t be creative. Also, we learn that Rett’s prefered podcast beverage is…water.

Next Show: Summer Releases – are they REALLY that important?

Well, just as everyone is starting Summer Vacation, Ben and Rett are back to work after Real Life cruelly intruded on them. That said, they’re tanned and ready! First up, iPad Board Games in the News and then, News of the Weird. Lots of odd game tidbits in the news this week – including a couple Ben worked with (bit never printed). Last but not least, Ben and Rett answer more reader mail about old licenses in the RPG market: Are they a problem?

Next show: June 7th. Really. Honest! Origins on tap!

Ben and Rett answer questions about copyrighted PDFs (sort of), game conventions in Western Canada (sort of), producing plastic minis terrain(mostly) and more (again, sort of). Then, after 49 episodes, they indulge themselves in a gabfest about their favorite games. No worrying about business, or production or anything other than talking about games they love – gems, dogs and other faves. Why? Because its fun!

Crazy cool minis terrain –

Rett returns from Little Wars with tales of unimaginable – and very small scale – beauty, while Ben yammers on about the arcane art of printing cards for your game. All in a spritely 40 minute (give or take) package!

Slow news week this week, despite GAMA Trade Show! That’s ok though as it gives our feckless heroes a chance to revisit the topic of opening your own game store and hit a few points they couldn’t manage to get in last week. All that, plus…well, just that really.

April 10th – Ben attempts to demystify card printing.

Paper Money #46: Opening a Game Store

Ben and Rett are back (minus the reverb) to talk about opening a game store. What do you need to know? How much will it cost? Things you never knew about Fixtures and Amenities. All this and the week’s news!

(Sorry for the huge delay getting this show out. After 45 episodes it finally happened. We had a recording with bad audio that I couldn’t fix and had to use. Also, I had a fever.)

In this show: Some news, David Miller recaps his trip to New York Toy Fair on behalf of the Purple Pawn and Ben and Rett review the upcoming shows for 2011 and recommend who should go based on whether they are game designers, retailers, or game companies. Note that Ben’s audio is fine, but Rett and Dave on the Skype channel have an annoying reverb. You can get used to it. I swear…
