The final game of the UK National Scrabble Championship was played between two former champions, Paul Allan and Allan Simmons. This time, Paul Allan clinched the title with the play of “bandura” (which is a Ukrainian lute) for a triple-word bingo worth 86 points. (For those trying to figure out how “bandura” is worth 86, the “d” was a blank, the “r” finished “tar”, and the final “a” was placed on the triple-word space and also finished “ta”.)

Chess continues to be played while the World Championship is underway…

In fact, other matches being played in India to celebrate the Championship included one for blind players, which was won by 16 year-old Sai Krishna, and the Women Grandmaster Tournament.

Ryan Harper of Trinidad & Tobago won the Umada Cup in Aruba.

FIDE selected 13th-ranked Peter Svidler for the open slot in the next Candidates Tournament, bypassing higher ranked players such as Alexander Grischuk (ranked 5th) and Hikaru Nakamura (ranked 4th).

While the FIDE Presidential Board approved plans for six Grand Prix events in 2014, agreements for only four have been signed so far. If the remaining two end up not happening, the two spots reserved in the next Candidates Tournament for Grand Prix winners will instead be selected one from the World Cup and one from the ratings list.

Backgammon

In the open section of the Capital Classic Backgammon Championships in Herndon, Virginia, the winner was Greg Merriman of Michigan.

At the Merit Open International Backgammon Championship in Cyprus, Sergey Erokhin of Russia took home the masters trophy and the team of Haris Christidis and Konstantinos Mitrelis from Greece the doubles trophy.

Collectible Card and Miniatures Games

Fantasy Flight Games’ World Championship Weekend was held in Roseville, Minnesota, where Alvaro Rodriguez of Spain claimed the title of Joust World Champion for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game. Ryan Jones, though, was crowned Melee World Champion and Overall World Champion. In the Android: Netrunner tournament, the winner was Jens Erickson. Jeremy Zwirn, the 2012 champion of Netrunner and Warhammer: Invasion, this year won at Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game. Dennis Harlien triumphed in the tiebreaker for Star Wars: The Card Game. Oliver Franke of Germany moved up from his second place finish last year in the Warhammer: Invasion championship. And in the final game of the Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game tournament, Paul Heaver battled back from a two-ship deficit and eliminated his opponent’s last ship with only one hull point to spare.

Rookie and new hometown hero, Luis Navas, won Magic: The Gathering Grand Prix Santiago.

Samuel Marti of Switzerland claimed victory with a blue-green deck at Magic: The Gathering Grand Prix Valencia.

At the Legend of the Five Rings Pacific Rim Championships, Edward Bareng claimed victory for Lion. Alexander Iarstev, playing Scorpion, was the winner at the Legend of the Five Rings South American Championships.

For the fifth year in a row, a Korean team has won the International Amateur Pair Go Championship in Tokyo.

Draughts

The winner of the European Draughts Championship was Peter van der Stap of the Netherlands.

The winner of the Portugal Open was Guntis Valneris.

Other Games

The winner of the 24th World Perudo Championships in London (the game is also known as Liar’s Dice) was Dan Reade.

From a touring series, 14 youngsters were invited to participate in the UK Lego Chima Challenge Championship, where Reggie Pegrum (age 9, from Waltham Abbey, Essex) was declared the winner.

Manoj Kumar won the Fiji Bitter Chess Championship. After a tie-break game, Kabrina Terubea took the title in the women’s section.

High school student, Tanraj Sohal is the youngest player ever to win the British Columbia Closed Chess Championship.

Grandmaster Alex Shabalov of Pennsylvania won the 4th Continental Class Championships in Arlington, Virginia. After defeating his chief rivals in rounds four and five, he coasted through the remaining two.

It was upset city at the National Challenger Chess tournament in New Delhi. None of the top four seeded players finished high enough to qualify for the first National Champioinship event scheduled for December. Instead, 20th seeded M.S. Thejkumar finished in first. While the first nine players from this tournament are guaranteed spots in the National Championship, since current World Champion Viswanathan Anand is not expected to participate, 10th place finisher, B. Adhiban should also qualify.

It was an underdog also that took the top position in the European Chess Club Cup, Czech G-Team Novy Bor.

At the Asian Cities Chess Team Championship, Tagaytay City (Philippines) finished in first place with 17 points. China’s Shanghai and Wuxi both ended with 15 points but Shanghai edged out Wuxi in the tiebreaker to claim second. From the Tagaytay team, grandmaster John Paul Gomez finished ahead of all others to win the individual competition, the Dubai Cup.

Looking forward, the 2014 Candidates Tournament has been scheduled for March 30th in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.

Backgammon

Malcolm David of Texas won the Florida State Backgammon Championship, Alex Zamanian the Connecticut State Backgammon Championship, Kenji Shimodaira the 19th Japan Backgammon Open, and Minakami Tsuyoshi of Japan the Chicago Backgammon Open.

The inaugural Gibraltar Backgammon Festival featured elite and novice sections. Two former world champions participated, along with representatives of 15 countries. The winner was Tilman Sohnchon of Germany.

Subbuteo

At the Subbuteo Challenge Cup in Manchester, Brian Dailey was the winner in the senior category and Kye Arnold the winner in the junior league.

Magic: The Gathering

At Grand Prix Antwerp, Patrick Dickmann, twin brother of another Grand Prix champion, bested a field of 1,600 to come in first place.

Monoblack Devotion carried Brian Braun-Duin to victory at Grand Prix Louisville.

At Grand Prix Hong Kong, Shuhei Nakamura claimed the sixth title of his career.

Jacek Jachymowski of Poland was the winner of the 2013 European Championship for Legend of the Five Rings.

Draughts

Jean Marc Ndjofang of Cameroon endured a rising room temperature on the final day of the ADG Amersfoort Open Championship (Netherlands), yet managed to maintain his lead and take home the trophy.

In Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, the World Women’s Championship was won by Zoja Golubeva of Latvia, the World Blitz Championship by Matrena Nogovitsyna of Russia, and the World Rapid Championship by Darya Tkachenko of Ukraine.

Fabiano Caruana of Italy and Boris Gelfand of Israel tied for first place at the Grand Prix in Paris. Unfortunately for Caruana, that leaves him just 10 points shy of qualifying for the 2014 Candidates Tournament. Instead, Vaselin Topalov of Bulgaria and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan will advance.

Also tying for first place were five players at the Lagos International Chess Classics: Omoifo Osemekhia, Ochuko Onovughe, and Emmanuel Maduagwuna of Nigeria with Abdelrahman Hesham and Mohammed Ezat of Egypt.

Though playing to a draw in the final round, Levon Aronian of Armenia won the Bilbao Chess Masters Final and was awarded the traditional txapela (a Basque beret).

Seventeen-year-old Jerry Casteel was declared South Dakota state chess champion.

Magic: The Gathering

Starting unranked and with no byes, local player, Justin Robb slogged his way through the competition to come out at the top of Grand Prix Brisbane.

Pierre-Christophe Mondon topped a field of 1,000 at the inaugural Grand Prix Oklahoma City and first event of Theros Limited.

Jeremy Dezani conquered Pro Tour Theros in Dublin with a mono-blue deck.

Xiangqi

At the Vietnam National Team Xiangqi Championships, where 18 cities and 160 individuals participated, Ho Chi Minh City won gold in the women’s blitz, men’s blitz, and women’s classic events. Ha Noi won gold in the men’s classic event.

In Hongkou, Sichuan Province, China, 2,380 players claimed the world record for the most participants in a Mahjong activity. [I’m sorry but this one’s not that impressive.]

Chess

The Women’s World Chess Championship is over, which is a good thing for the winner, Hou Yifan. Still only 19 years old and a full-time student, she has to get back to the university and cram for exams.

After 13 rounds at the World Junior Chess Championship in Kocaeli, Turkey the winner in the open division was Yangyi Yu of China and the runner-up Alexander Ipatov of Turkey (both Grandmasters). In the girls division the winner was Aleksandra Goryachkina of Russia and the runner-up Zhansaya Abdumalik of Kazakhstan, a Women’s Grandmaster and Women’s International Master, respectively. I don’t know the other ages, but Ms. Abdumalik is only 13.

The Lake Sevan International Chess Tournament was won by 18 year old Karen Grigoryan of Armenia.

San Sebastian finished 8 points ahead of St. Benilde to win the 89th Philippine NCAA Chess competition.

Humpy Koneru is the winner of the Women’s Grand Prix in Tashkent.

Scrabble

Amazingly, the winner of the Godswill Akpadio International Scrabble Classic in Uyo, Nigeria was not Nigel Richards. The New Zealander came in fourth place, behind Sammy Okosagah, Olatunde Oduwole, and Komol Panyasonponlet. Mr. Okosagah took home a prize of $15,000. And Chief Godswill Akpabio, Akwa Ibom state governor, was named a Pillar of African Scrabble by the Association of Africa Scrabble Federations.

Despite being the favorite to win at the World Youth Scrabble Championship qualifiers in Karachi, Pakistan, Javeria Mirza was trailing by almost 100 points, when in her last turn she scored a bingo and pulled ahead 453 to 452.

The winner of the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players Open Championship, Leon Belony, however, finished with a lead of 767 points.

Xiangqi

Reigning women’s champion Ngo Lan Huong of Vietnam retained her title at the Asian Xiangqi Championship in Sydney, Australia with a record of 4-1 at the event.

Sia Leh Ching won the youth division of the Kapit Foochow Association Chinese Chess Competition in Borneo.

For the eighth time, Deep Junior has won the World Computer Chess Championship. Deep Junior is a Chess-playing computer program written by Israelis Amir Ban and Shay Bushinsky and running on a dual 12-core Intel Xenon I5 2.7 GHz computer. Its only loss during the recent tournament in Yokohama was to a German program called Jonny and running on a 2400-core system.

The Punjab State Under-25 Chess Championship was a success despite complaints of a lack of support from the state government. The winner was Pankaj Kumar of Bathinda.

Speaking of a lack of support, Chess is out for the 2014 Asian Games.

A well-run U.S. Masters tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina saw a number of upsets and the awarding of numerous titles (one Grandmaster, three International Masters, one Women’s Grandmaster, and one Women’s International Master). The tournament champion was Rauf Mamedov.

At the inaugural Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis, Magnus Carlsen came in first place, earning a prize of $70,000. It was also Carlsen’s first tournament in the United States.

Scott Varagona won the Alabama State Chess Championship for the fifth time.

Sri Lanka was a big winner at the 8th Asian Schools Chess Championship, with 16 medals, including one gold.

Dominoes

Eschewing the usual, Tom Holmes and Roland Trim of Bristol, UK, set a world record for standing up dominoes. They built a 5.275 meter freestanding dominoes tower, which is 20 cm taller than the previous record.

Scrabble

Wajid Iqbal was the winner of the 2nd Ranking Scrabble Tournament in Karachi.

At the British 42nd National Scrabble Championship semi-final match in Cardiff, Allan Simmons and Paul Allan advanced. The five game final will take place November 3rd in London.

Magic: The Gathering

Josh McClain was triumphant in the Modern format of Grand Prix Detroit.

Other Card Games

The 2013 North American Champion for Warhammer: Invasion only learned the game less than a month and a half before taking the title.

Tom Capor won the North American Championship for Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game for the fifth consecutive year.

A team of Israeli seniors won the 38th Backgammon World Championship.

Magic: The Gathering

Grand Prix Warsaw’s Standard format was dominated by Red-Green and won by Wenzel Krautmann of Germany.

At Grand Prix Kitakyushu (also Standard), Raymond Tan of Malaysia earned the trophy after mulliganing down to four cards but still coming out ahead in game two of the final round.

Grand Prix Oakland was a Sealed/Booster Draft event and conquered by Hall of Fame player William Jensen.

Another Sealed/Booster Draft event, Grand Prix Prague was won by Anatoly Chuhwichov of Russia.

Other Card Games

After taking fist place in the Melee event (four-player games) and second in Joust (one-on-one games), Steve Simoni was declared North American Champion for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game at Gen Con.

The 2013 World Champion for the Legend of the Five Rings CCG was also at declared at Gen Con. His name, Tom Kirchgesner.

Bobby Drake won the first Kaijudo Summer Championship in Seattle. During the weekend event, the invited competitors also spent time with Wizards of the Coast’s Kaijudo R&D team to help develop future cards.

Chess

Vladimir Kramnik has taken the 2013 FIDE World Cup, though he won only one game in the final match with Dmitry Andreikin. The other three games were a draw.

At the always outdoors Moscow Blitz Championship contestants prepared for the cold and wet weather had an advantage. In the main competition, top-10 FIDE ranked player, Sergey Karjakin, was victorious. In the women’s division, Daria Charochkina bested her nearest competitor by 2.5 points. The veteran men’s division was led by Vladimir Voevodin and the veteran women’s division (first time at the tournament) by Galina Strutinskaya. junior championships were won by Stanislav Romanov won the boys’ junior division and Anna Vasenina won the girls’ junior division.

Alex Lenderman won the Atlantic Open.

Awonder Liang is the youngest Chess master in the United States. At 10 years old, his rating is 2,220.

Scrabble

The Guyana Association of Scrabble Player’s Open tournament was won by the organization’s president, Leon Belony.

Nigel Richards was at it again, this time winning the 2013 United States National Scrabble Championship and a $10,000 prize in Las Vegas. This was Richards’ fifth time winning the U.S. Championship. His record at this event was 24-7, with a cumulative score of 1,934 points. Actually, Richard lost his final game in Las Vegas 442-421 to Komol Panyasophonlert of Thailand. His lead going in to that round, though, was enough to maintain the win.

Yu-Gi-Oh!

At the North American World Championship Qualifier, Patrick Hoban claimed the title of North American Champion and Ben Leverett the title of North American Dragon Duel Champion. The Dragon Duel tournament series is only open to those born in 2000 or later. Both earned places at the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG World Championship in Las Vegas (August 11-12) plus prizes that included a variety of card packs, a tablet computer, a personalized jersey, and a super-rare Digvorzhak, King of Heavy Industry YCS Prize Card.

Chess

The two participating titled players were upset in the open section at the Las Vegas Mind Sports Festival, leaving the Championship and grand trophy to Jeffrey Gallegos. In the under-1800 section the winner was Alex Stiger, in the under-1400 section high school chess coach, Robert Lucero, and in the under-1000 section, with the only perfect 5-0 record, Paul Ventura.

Alexander Kocheyev of Belarus won the Minsk Open 2013 tournament.

K Jennitha Anto of India won the women’s section of the International Physically Disabled Chess Association 13th Annual Tournament. The event was divided in to two groups, one for those this mobility impairments and one for those with other medical issues.

Carissa Yip, age 9, is now the youngest U.S. Chess Expert.

India took the title in the World Youth (Under-16) Chess Olympiad, besting Iran in the final round. Second place went to Russia and third to Turkey.

At least five grandmasters participated in the Manhattan Open but it was FM Leif Pressman of New York who won the event.

At the Ramadan Rapid Open Chess Tournament in Qatar, locally based Filipino player Robert Arellano defeated Shatrughan Jha of India in the final round, taking home the trophy and a prize of 3,000 riyals.

Magic: The Gathering

Grand Prix Remini saw a particularly international group of contestants testing the waters of 2014 Limited. Christoph Aukenthaler of Austria took the title of Champion with blue/green.

On the same weekend, Alexander Hayne of Canada won Grand Prix Calgary by besting mostly local competitors.

But it was Amsterdam that hosted the Magic World Championship and World Magic Cup. The winner of the former was Shahar Shenhar of Israel, of the latter, team France. An underdog and the youngest player in the Magic World Championship, Shenhar battled back from a 0-2 start in the final match to take home the $40,000 top prize. Second place, with a $20,000 prize, went to Reid Duke of the United States. More than 70 four-player teams competed in the World Magic Cup. The members of the French winning team, Raphaël Lévy, Yann Guthmann, Timothée Simonot, and Stephane Soubrier, took home prizes of $12,000 each.

Being inducted in to the Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour Hall of Fame this year are Luis Scott-Vargas, William Jensen, and Ben Stark. Another player, Chris Pikula, narrowly missed the vote threshold for getting in, so WOTC is extending a special invitation to the next Pro Tour stop in Dublin to make sure he has sufficient Pro Tour Points to qualify again next year.

Other

At the Rubik’s Cube World Championship, there were 17 different events, including 2×2, 7×7, 3×3 with feet, and 5×5 blindfolded. But the most coveted title, for the classic 3×3, went to Feliks Zemdegs of Australia, who’s average time was 8.18 seconds. His fastest time was 7.36 seconds (which is not a world’s record). I’ve never been able to solve a Rubik’s Cube, even having spent as much as an hour trying!

The 2013 Online Hive Tournament has concluded on BoardSpace.net. All games used the upcoming Pillbug expansion. User “image13” won.

Surprising no one, Nigel Richards of New Zealand won the Brand’s King’s Cup Crossword event in Thailand. The King’s Cup is the largest Scrabble tournament in the world and this was Richards’ tenth win.

Abigail McDonald is not only the winner of the latest Guyana National Scrabble Championship but also the first person ever to have won it three times in a row. Her prize for the achievement was $50,000 and a trip to the world championship in Prague.

The Winner of the Penang International Scrabble Championship in Malaysia was Pakistani Mohammad Inayatullah—his prize 3,000 Ringgits.

Chess

With over a thousand players, the 41st World Open in Arlington, Virginia suffered some major organizational problems—some match-ups weren’t announced until after the games were supposed to start and many of the players weren’t provided with boards and pieces, so they had to go around borrowing sets. In terms of results, there was a ten-way tie for first place in the open section! Only a blitz playoff gave Varuzhan Akobian the champion title and an extra $70 (out of a $20,000 divided prize).

The 2013 International Championship of Slovakia in the town of Banska Stiavnica was more of a festival than a contest, with medieval costume and sword-fighting demonstrations and musical performances. Two Chess grandmasters played each other blindfolded while people reenacted the game on an adjacent life-sized board. Oh, and by the way, Tomas Krnan of Canada came in first place in the tournament.

At the Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games, China won three out of four gold medals in Chess, and also took home two silver and one bronze. The remaining gold was won by Vietnam.

Partial results are in for the World Championship in Composing for Individuals (WCCI) 2010-2012. Each participant was allowed to submit up to six puzzles published during the 3 year period in each category. The winners in the Twomovers category was Marjan Kovačević, in the Threemovers category Aleksandr Feoktistov, in Moremovers Mikhail Marandyuk, and in Endgame Studies Sergiy Didukh.

Shahriyar Mammadyarov of Azerbaijan won the FIDE Grand Prix in Beijing, beating out Boris Gelfand of Israel.

In the Commonwealth & South African Open Chess Championship Abhijeet Gupta of India finished first in the open section, Knowledge Ndlovu of Zimbabwe first in the B section, and Rakesh Kulkarni of India first in blitz.

At the Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games, China and South Korea earned six medals each—including golds in women’s team, men’s individual, and mixed pair for China and men’s team for South Korea.

Magic: The Gathering

Seth Manfield took the trophy in the Modern Constructed format Grand Prix Kansas City using a Melira-Birthing Pod deck.

Reid Duke battled back after losing the first game of the finals and mulliganing down to 5 in the second, eventually taking the title at Grand Prix Miami.

Dominoes

They weren’t playing a game but a team in Germany toppled a record-setting 272,297 dominoes.

At the only Modern Masters limited event and largest Magic tournament ever held (4,500 players), Grand Prix Las Vegas, Neal Oliver lost his first game but none of the next 17 to take home the trophy and a $3,500 prize.

Meanwhile, in Return to Ravnica block play, Patriawan Kurniadi was the winner at Grand Prix Bangkok, Oscar Christensen at Grand Prix Gothenburg, Andres Martinez at Grand Prix Guadalajara, and Andrew Longo, Eric Phillipps, and Eric Berger in the team matches at Grand Prix Providence.

Scrabble

The Gulf Scrabble Championship concluded June 1st, with Mohammed Suleiman, a Canadian-Pakistani national representing the UAE, taking the top position. Suleiman won 15 out of 20 games played. Ralph Lobo scored 44 bingos in 20 games played at the tournament, while Ronald Credo, 2012 Champion, scored the highest game (640 points) and Selwyn Lobo achieved the highest score for an individual word (176 for “Cracking”).

At the Canadian National Scrabble Championship, Adam Logan was the winner. Logan won three straight games in the best-of-five final series, scoring words such as “Gardyloo” (68), “Eglomise” (65) and “Zoecia” (34).

Chess

The World Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships took place in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan was declared the World Rapid Chess Champion and Le Quang of Vietnam the World Blitz Chess Champion. A total of $400,000 in prize money was handed out.

The latest ratings from FIDE show Magnus Carlsen of Norway ranked #1 (at 2864), followed by Levon Aronian of Armenia (2813) and Vladimir Kramnik of Russia (2803). The current World Champion, Viswanathan Anand of India, is actually ranked fourth at a rating of 2786.

Even Anand’s fourth-place rating will probably not hold up, though, after tying for eighth in the Tal Memorial tournament. That one was won by Boris Gelfand of Israel. Carlsen came in second, while Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan, Dmitry Andreikin of Russia, and Fabiano Caruana of Italy all tied for third.

The winner of the 2013 U.S. Junior Closed Championship was Daniel Naroditsky, 17 and an International Master. At the Asian Youth Chess Championship, gold medals were awarded to Indian girls B. Pratusha (under-18 section), S. Riya (under-14), R.B. Vaishalai (under-12), D. Divya (under-8), and Savithrishri (under-6). International Master (IM) Jan Emmanuel Garcia of Manila took home gold in under-18 Blitz and Standard.

If you’re keeping track of the young Chess prodigies, though, watch out for Sparsh Bisht, a tournament player in India who’s only 4 years old!

Chess player, Quang Liem, is recognized as the richest athlete in Vietnam.

Dominoes

The X FID Domino World Championship just concluded in Orlando. Leading the individual results with a record of 9-0 was Daniel Diaz of the United States. Also with a record of 9-0, Gabriel Sitton and Rafael Villareal of Panama topped the team competition.

Headquarters teams retained their titles in the Guyana Police Force Inter-Division Dominoes Tournament.

A 6-year-old won the Brian Bainbridge Memorial Dominoes Tournament, which was named in memory of his grandfather.

Backgammon

At the 2nd Giants of Backgammon Invitational, first place was secured by Petko Kostadinov of the United States and second place by Tsuyoshi Minakami of Japan. Masayuki Mochizuki of Japan took first place in the coincident 33rd Chicago Open Backgammon Tournament, while tying for third in the Invitational.

At the Los Angeles Backgammon Open, the first place winner was Ed O’Laughlin and the second place winner, Malcolm Davis.

Raj Jansari of England won the 2013 London Open Backgammon Tournament and was also runner-up in the associated Professionals’ Tournament. The winner of the Professionals’ Tournament was Fabio Gullotta of Italy.

Marbles

The Toy and Miniature Museum of Kansas City failed in its effort to retake the world record for largest marble tournament. Only 300 people showed up when they needed 877. The museum had previously set a record with 677 in 2007 but lost it to the Boy Scouts in 2010.
